Job overview

Royal School for the Deaf Derby is a unique provider of day and residential placements for deaf children and young people aged 3 – 19. We are looking for a person to manage our busy campus and help us realise the wishes of children and young people for a contemporary space to live and learn in.

Ideally applicants will already hold successful experience of managing a site and leading a team. Experience of working in an educational setting is not essential but good IT, excellent organisational skills and a practical hands-on approach to work are. Our campus is busy so you’ll need to be able to work calmly and be well organised to get the job done.

Professional development is also important. If you don’t already hold a relevant underpinning Health & Safety qualification we will sponsor you to achieve the National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety accredited by National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH). Opportunities to work towards the NEBOSH diploma are also available. A personalised program of continuing professional development led by skill set and the demands of the role will be discussed and agreed with the successful applicant.

Key duties and responsibilities are to:

·        Ensure our premises and equipment are safe, secure, fit for purpose, well maintained and compliant with our Health and Safety obligations

·        Assume delegated responsibility for Health & Safety matters including acting as the School’s Health and Safety and Fire Officer

·        Meet and wherever possible exceed the National Minimum Standards for Residential Special Schools as they relate to premises

·        Develop and oversee a rolling programme of repairs and maintenance works; organise and oversee minor and major improvement projects in liaison with the Senior Leadership Team

·        Source best value for money contractors, manage and assure the quality of their work

·        Manage and lead a team of people including a maintenance worker and housekeeping team

A brief description of our Campus & Buildings

The School enjoys a large leafy-green eleven acre campus with ample parking facilities. Derby city centre is within walking distance, the Peak National Park a stone’s throw away.

We have our own sports field, sports hall, outdoor gym, MUGA and play areas. Primary, Secondary and Post 16 learners enjoy their own discrete departments. Residential children and young people have separate house blocks. There are specialised D&T, Science, Food Technology and ICT classrooms in Secondary Department, a dedicated health centre, audiology suite, speech and language therapy rooms and a Deaf Heritage Centre. The relatively new Karten building provides additional space for general administration, conferences and training events.

A big repair and renew plan has now been completed and we’re looking forward to a maintain and improve plan which includes paving works across the campus, upgrades to our main plant room and a full renovation of our main residence block reflecting the wishes of children and young people for a contemporary space to live and learn in. So far major roof works, removal of portacabins, modernised library, renewal of our Sport shall floor, full main school redecoration and toilets are complete.

The School is supported by a range of external experts and scrutineers helping to assess key risk areas, complete risk assessments, implement and monitor control measures. Routine and ad hoc maintenance checks across the campus are up and running and a new facilities software system is in place ready to be utilised.

Closing date for applications: Wednesday 17 April 2024 Interviews: Tuesday 23 April 2024
