About the Role

The Canteen Assistant will work with other staff, especially the Chef/ Manager and other Canteen Assistants, to implement the College’s goals for the canteen, while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality. Duties will also include assisting with the preparation of food, service at Recess and Lunchtime and clean up after service of over 1300 staff and students.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a Canteen Assistant include but not limited to:

  • Maintain canteen work areas, equipment, and utensils in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Prepare, cook, serve, and assist with food and drink orders for daily operation as directed by the Chef/Manager
  • Prepare and make hot and cold drinks for daily service.
  • Support the Chef/Manager and any teachers and students involved in the Canteen’s operations.
  • Serve teachers, students and seniors and prioritises when necessary.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of all items necessary to run drinks area.
  • Assist with purchases of kitchen supplies and equipment, or requisitions.
  • Assist in the receipt of deliveries of orders in good condition, checks that purchases and invoice/statements are correct and stores and refrigerates goods.
  • Take responsibility for dishes in drinks area and assists when directed with washing up.
  • Fully support and implement WHS procedures and models safe and healthy practices for students and volunteers.
  • Keep machinery and equipment clean, hygienic, and well maintained, within the areas of responsibility designated by the Chef/Manager.
  • Maintain and rotates refrigerator items.
  • Maintain hygiene and tidiness in preparation areas.
  • Ensure rubbish and recycling is properly dealt with each day.
  • Participate in end of term cleaning of the canteen area with all other staff.
  • Carry out an end of year stock take of supplies in the canteen in conjunction with other staff as directed by the Chef/Manager
  • Work beyond normal hours to support functions outside College hours on a paid basis e.g. Parent/Teacher interviews, Twilight Professional development etc.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as directed by the Chef/Manager and the Business Manager.
  • Promote a safe, secure environment for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Follow Workplace Health and Safety Practices to ensure that the canteen and equipment is operated and maintained in a safe and hygienic manner.
  • Participate in purpose-based networks, team activities, performance management processes and professional development and training programs.

Essential Criteria

It is essential that the successful applicant have:

  • A commitment to the goals of Catholic education and a readiness to foster the aims and vision of the College in the wider community.
  • Hospitality and cooking experience
  • Proficient in managing high-volume food production during peak operational periods.
  • Applies knowledge and a broad range of skills in a variety of roles and tasks.
  • Uses discretion and judgement in planning and organising and achieving outcomes in time constraints.
  • Works under general direction. A General Employee at this level may work semi-autonomously (if working alone). A General Employee at this level may be required to supervise other School Operational Services Employees

Other Eligibility Criteria 

  • You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to be eligible to apply for this position. 
  • Appointment is subject to satisfactory employment screening for child related employment in accordance with CECG policy.
