Job overview

The Garden is a maintained special school in Hackney consisting of 2 sites.

The main Garden Special school site is in Stoke Newington and admits younger autistic pupils with severe learning difficulties between the ages of 4 and 16 years old. The Pavilion school site is in Clapton and admits older autistic students including Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5 in accordance with the admissions criteria.

The Garden/Pavilion School seeks to appoint a highly capable, well-qualified Careers Adviser who has successful experience of working with SEND children and young people.

Our school interprets and applies the concept of careers in a wide range of contexts to suit the special educational needs of autistic pupils with a range of severe learning difficulties. It does not imply that every pupil will have the goal of paid employment, instead we aim for their lives to be enriched and developed through work related learning opportunities.

The Careers Adviser will collaborate with other school staff to create opportunities for pupils to explore their strengths and interests and develop relevant skills and experience through enterprise activities and in work related learning contexts including businesses and community organisations.

The main responsibilities of the Career’s Adviser will be to -

·        Implement and update the school’s careers policy as necessary and oversee the careers programme in the Garden/Pavilion school.

·        Ensure the careers programme is embedded in the curriculum and focuses on developing pupils’ independence, communication and transferable life and social skills that support careers, employability, and enterprise.

·        Ensure the school meets the eight Gatsby benchmarks for good career guidance as recommended by the Department of Education Careers Strategy 2018.

·        Enable pupils to contribute their views and wishes on decisions about options available through means appropriate to their needs.

·        Develop links with employers who could work together with the school to enable suitable work-related learning and other employment opportunities in a supportive and enabling environment.

·        Plan school events linked to the careers programme, such as visits to and from local employers and post sixteen providers.

·        Ensure pupils reach a positive destination in learning or training after Year 11.

The successful candidate will be well-organised and an excellent communicator with a thorough knowledge and track record of leading the development and delivery of careers education for SEND pupils.

They will have the necessary skills and experience to develop this area of work in a specialised, multi-disciplinary team environment to create opportunities for all students to benefit from a specialised and personalised careers curriculum.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all staff to share this commitment. For this post pre-employment checks will be carried out, references will be sought, and successful candidates will need to undertake an enhanced DBS check. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or age.

Closing date for applications: 5th June 2023
