Job overview

United Learning

Barnsley Academy is part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England. Schools within United Learning work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. By collecting expertise and combining resources, we help to make the tough job of teaching a little easier. With a shared curriculum and lesson plans from around the group available to all, our teachers have strong foundations to lead the engaging, rounded education our children deserve. Our intranet site, United Hub, is just one example of how we share this resource and communicate across sites, helping to simplify processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance. We reward our staff: with wide career opportunities – between Primary and Secondary, Academy and Independent – better pay, benefits, and ultimately the satisfaction of helping every child at each of our schools to succeed and reach their full potential.

About the role:

We are seeking to appoint a new position of Careers Advisor to join our team at Barnsley Academy. We are looking to recruit someone with a child centred approach and excellent people skills to support and guide our young people making decisions about their careers. You will have excellent communication skills as you will be a crucial point of contact with students, local businesses and further education establishments. You will act as a role model to students, so professionalism and confidentiality will be key attributes. This post is for an Easter 2021 start.

Main duties will include:

  • Advise students on post-16 careers guidance / options.
  • Make decisions and enact reforms to ensure that the school meets the Gatsby
  • Benchmarks
  • Review and evaluate guidance and provide information for school improvement planning, Ofsted and other purposes.
  • Prepare and implement a CEIAG development plan.
  • Liaise and coordinate with external businesses and training providers to effectively support students.
  • To manage the effective transition of students from Year 11 into Post 16 destinations, both internally and to external providers.
  • To coordinate all IAG meetings within the Academy.

What we can offer you:

  • Excellent facilities and resources.
  • A chance to become part of one of the largest groups of academies in the country.
  • Caring, dedicated and friendly students.
  • Colleagues who are supportive, friendly and who are committed to each other’s professional development.
  • Excellent employee benefits which include access to the local government pension scheme.

What we would like from you:

  • Level 6 Diploma in Careers Guidance and Development.
  • Recent experience as a Careers Advisor looking for progression from a more junior role if recently qualified.
  • To be both approachable and have excellent people skills.
  • To be a team player.
  • To have a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • A fundamental belief in the power of education to enable pupils to achieve anything they set their minds to.
  • Passionate about your area of knowledge, ensure student career prospects are both aspirational and attainable.

Recently graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted (January 2020) this is a fantastic opportunity to join an academy making year on year progress under current leadership. In turn, we are looking for a candidate committed to playing a part in transforming the lives of our young people. Please see the Job Description and Person Specification for further information.
