Job overview

Grade 10 (SCP 27 - 30)  £27,162 - £29,274 per year

The contracted hours for this post are 37 hours per week - term time plus 10 days.

We are looking for an experienced Careers Professional who can embed CEIAG in all aspects of the school.  However, we do not want a programme that is just ‘added on’ or just for KS4 students, instead we want one that threads through the curriculum and our students’ learning journey, and provides them with genuine opportunities and experiences to go on to be happy and successful adults.

A key focus of the CPDC is to develop, implement and deliver this whole school programme, but in such a way that it links to all other aspects of a student’s life. This is a newly created role, so it is an exciting opportunity for the correct person with experience, flair and drive to make it their own, be a key part of a busy Secondary School and make a real difference to the lives of our students.

You will be expected to work closely with other colleagues across the school such as the PSHE and Pastoral Teams to ensure CEIAG compliments and enhances other aspects of a students’ school life.

In this individual we want to see a self-starter, someone who is confident, proactive and who can bring new ideas and inspire our students to raise their aspirations.  The CPDC will provide guidance and support to students to help them forge a path to their chosen careers, to help them identify any barriers and work with them to overcome these in order for them to achieve their full potential in school and in their future lives.  We want someone who has a good understanding of the context of our school and a strong desire to work with our students; someone who will work hard and go ‘the extra mile’, because our students deserve this.

We would expect applicants to have the relevant careers advice and guidance qualification at Level 6 or above (or at least be working towards this qualification) with experience of:

• Providing careers advice and support to students up to the age of 16 from those who have high aspirations to those who may not realise their own potential.

• Planning and organising careers events, experiences and CEIAG resources

• Experience of liaising with outside agencies

• Confidence in presenting & training groups of students, staff and other stakeholders

• Advising on suitable career pathways and how to support those at risk of not undertaking post-16 pathways

• Establishing robust and effective systems and processes to track and monitor the CEIAG programme

• Analysing data and writing reports linked to CEIAG/Personal Development.

This is an exciting time to join Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and develop a truly coherent provision for our students.  You will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff who are welcoming, open-minded and supportive. It is a particularly exciting time to join the school as we are undertaking a whole school review of our PD/CEIAG curriculum to ensure our students will leave us and be able to ’stand shoulder to shoulder’ with any other young person, from any other background.

Being a member of The Red Kite Alliance, we receive support, advice and training from some of the most successful and forward-thinking schools in the country.  We encourage our staff to attend meetings and CPD, and make links with their counterparts in RKA schools, to aid their individual development as well as the development of their team.

We encourage our staff, not only to join in with various activities throughout the school, to be proactive and come up with new and fresh ideas to engage and enthuse both our students and staff.

Staff Benefits include:

- Bespoke CPD

- Employee Healthcare (including physiotherapy referrals, counselling and lifestyle advice)

- Pension (West Yorkshire Pension Fund)

- Staff Supervision (a personal & confidential counselling & support service)

- Varied Staff Wellbeing Initiatives

- Cycle to Work Scheme

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check. A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.

Our school:

We are an oversubscribed, 11-16 comprehensive school situated in North Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Having been awarded ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted in March 2022, this is a key time for Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and continue to develop a truly coherent and high-quality provision for our students. In this role you will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff, who are welcoming, courageous, open-minded, and supportive.

We are privileged to have been part of the Alex Timpson Programme, and our commitment to becoming a Trauma Informed School was nationally recognised in November 2021, when we were awarded the Attachment Research Community (Secondary) Award.

What makes Spen Valley High School different?

We are proud to be a Trauma Informed School and are looking for someone who fully supports our vision and approach. We know that all young people have been disadvantaged by the Covid pandemic but alongside this, we have a significant number of students in our school with complex backgrounds. These young people not only require, but deserve courageous and resilient teachers who can balance the teaching of their subject to a high standard, with helping their students to navigate their way through the challenges they face. We make no excuses about our approach; but this is not about ‘dumbing down’, far from it, we want colleagues with high expectations but who can manage students through outstanding teaching and developing strong relationships. We require someone with good emotional intelligence and who will show warmth, compassion and empathy to all our students.

We pride ourselves on being ethical leaders, and leading with integrity. When joining Spen Valley you are entering an environment that balances professional challenge with support and kindness. We expect our colleagues to work hard, and go the ‘extra mile’ for our students, but in doing so we recognise that additional support is sometimes necessary and our Trauma Informed and relational approach extends to the way we work with our staff. We offer a wide range of CPD opportunities, including a bespoke CPD package that genuinely meets the needs of each colleague. As a member of the Red Kite Teaching Alliance, we receive high-quality support, advice and training and work closely with colleagues from some of the most successful schools in Yorkshire. We encourage our staff not only in their involvement in various activities throughout the school, but also to be proactive and develop new and fresh ideas to engage and enthuse both our staff and students.
