Job overview

Governor, Trustee and Director

RMS is looking to recruit a new Chair of Governors to lead its experienced and diverse Board to place the School in the best possible position to meet the challenges of the future.

We have recently developed a new and dynamic strategic vision for the school, with input from the whole school community, which is now being used as a basis for the School’s Development Plan for the next five years. We have a Board with a diverse range of skills and expertise, which needs an aspirational leader to harness their enthusiasm and energies to help move the school forward with our vision and plan, particularly against the uncertain economic and political horizons currently faced by the sector.

The Chair will develop a collaborative relationship with Governors, balancing respectful and constructive dialogue, blending challenge and support. With an ability to lead the Board’s consideration of key strategic issues, the Chair will secure collective agreement, supported by clear decisions and actions.

The Chair will also seek to build a strong, effective and constructive working relationship with the Head, and will challenge the Head to lead the school well and drive our strategic development forward.

The Chair will be supported in these aims by a Deputy Chair and Chairs of the six Sub-Committees; the Clerk to the Governors will work closely with the Chair on communication, administrative and regulatory matters.

Due to the potential for unmanageable conflicts of interest, we do not feel it appropriate for current parents at the school to apply.

Potential candidates are strongly encouraged to explore the RMS website https://www.rmsforgirls.com/ and social media accounts for more information about our thriving school, with its inclusive community spirit that encourages both girls and staff to share a commitment to continued personal, professional and academic development.

Values and vision

The Royal Masonic School sets very high standards for the academic progress of its pupils. It offers an engaging and vibrant curriculum, with a number of modern teaching facilities to help its pupils reach their full potential.

Aside from academic success, the school also highly values emotional and social intelligence, with girls being encouraged to steer their own learning and become independent and self-motivated.

ISI report

“Sharply focused assessments by experienced staff ensure that the next steps are suitably challenging for every child. A careful balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities enables most children to reach or exceed their expected levels in the seven areas of learning. Daily opportunities for outdoor learning in all of these areas are limited in the classes without immediate access to outside facilities.”
