Job overview

The Vacancy

The Governing Body is looking to fill the vacant Chair position from 1 July 2023. This would suit someone with some knowledge of school governance or wishes to apply their current leadership experience within an educational setting to help drive QEHS to be the best it can be.

Queen Elizabeth’s is one of Lincolnshire’s 16 grammar schools and the school’s core values of Tradition, Achievement, and Opportunity revolve around ensuring our students are well cared for, academically challenged and, afforded access to a broad range of fulfilling and enriching co-curricular activities. As a result, students at QEHS feel safe, flourish within an environment of academic rigour, and develop interests and skills which will go on to serve them well throughout their lives.

The governing body of QEHS is responsible for setting the ethos, vision and strategy of the school, working with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to identify areas where the school needs to improve and planning how to make those improvements. We strive to ensure that the educational performance of the pupils is strong and that the budget is used properly and effectively. The 2022 A Level and GCSE results were the strongest in years with the school being in the top 20% of secondary schools in the East Midlands.

We are also looking to recruit two further governors to the Board to support the ongoing development of this wonderful educational asset in Gainsborough. We are looking to draw on individuals who might have a range of experiences with a background in (but not limited to) financial and legal services, estates management, marketing and human resource management. However, the key attribute we are looking for are individuals with a passion to see our students succeed and can work as part of a team to achieve that end.

First established in 1589, Queen Elizabeth’s High School is a grammar school located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The school has existed in its current guise as a co-educational grammar school since 1983, when the two single-sex schools merged into a single institution. A state grammar school, Queen Elizabeth’s is academically selective in its admissions but charges no fees for tuition. With around 1200 pupils on roll in a co-educational setting aged 11-18, the school is noticeably larger than most secondary schools, around 150 of these residing in the school sixth form. Queen Elizabeth’s has seen extensive modernisation and development over the years.
