Job overview

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is a leading international conservatoire located in the heart of Manchester, with a reputation for attracting talented students and teachers from all over the world.   Now in its fifth decade, the RNCM is relatively young, but its rich history spans back to 1893 when Sir Charles Hallé founded the Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM). In 1973 this institution merged with the Northern School of Music (NSM), and the RNCM was born. Today, the College is a thriving establishment delivering world renowned music education and training to some 900 students from 60 different countries.

Our Board of Governors is responsible for the effective stewardship and strategic direction of the College as well as the safeguarding of its mission and values. The Board’s current Chair, Mr Nicholas Prettejohn, will retire in December 2020.  We are now seeking applicants from suitably experienced individuals who are interested in serving as our next Chair; this being an exceptional opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of the College through the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan and beyond.

All our Board Members are Charity Trustees of an exempt charity and therefore you will have the responsibilities and potential liabilities that go with Trustee status.

Our new Chair will have a strong personal commitment to higher education, a passion for music and an empathy with/appreciation of the distinctive ethos and values of the RNCM.  They will share our commitment to internationally recognised excellence and will understand what is needed for the College to deliver on its strategic aspirations.

The approximate overall time commitment is 14-18 days per annum which includes representing the College at external and fundraising events.  Membership of the Board is not remunerated, but reasonable expenses incurred in the course of College business will be reimbursed. The initial term of appointment is three years which may be extended upon the recommendation of the Nominations Committee by two further periods of three years.
We are committed to increasing the diversity of our Board and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates from all sectors of the community.
