Job overview

Emanuel School seeks an exceptional Chaplain who will play a key role nurturing the spiritual life of the school, leading chapel worship and acting as pastor to our community.

The Chaplain is responsible for the provision of regular chapel services, large-scale occasional services such as carol services and any occasional offices. A visible Christian presence in the school, the Chaplain seeks to cultivate spiritual life in imaginative ways, including the leading of discussion groups on moral issues. They are also an important pastoral presence, providing a pastoral listening service for pupils and staff and working closely with the Deputy Head (Pastoral). 

The Chaplain must be approachable for pupils of different faiths and of none and must enjoy getting to know pupils and staff in the varied contexts of a busy London day school. The Chaplain will also provide support and guidance to teaching and support staff.

Ordained applicants should be ordained deacon or priest in the Church of England or within the wider Anglican Communion. Lay applicants must demonstrate appropriate training in youth work and theological literacy and will need to be licensed by the Bishop of Kingston.

The post may be full or part-time (2 days per week). A full-time post will be combined with academic teaching or another role dependent on the qualifications, strengths, and experience of the successful candidate.

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
