Job overview

We are in an incredible position to be able to expand our offering at Portfield School. With the introduction of new students and new classrooms, we also need more Teachers!

Our school provision is oversubscribed each year, and we are incredibly proud to be Ofsted 'Good' aspiring to become 'Outstanding'.

To be considered for this role, you would need to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

The role

As a primary class teacher, you would support pupils with special educational needs, specifically autism, within our primary phase. The role would be to work with our students to teach and guide them through their educational journey.

The role is to teach a key stage 1 class of seven students aged 5-7. Some of the students are verbal, and some are non speaking. The students use speech and/or symbols to communicate. Their curriculum is play-based, and they are working to develop their communication, social interaction, physical and independence skills, and early reading, writing and maths. They follow the Read Write Inc phonics programmes. Attention Autism is also an integral part of their curriculum.

The students need a creative and playful but structured approach to learning.

Part of the role will be to lead a team of teaching assistants who help the class run smoothly.

You will have access to work with specialist facilities, such as our therapy pool and sensory rooms, creating unique and inspiring environments.

This is a full-time, term-time position.

About You

For this primary phase of learning, we are looking for someone who has:

  • Expertise in teaching and qualified teacher status
  • Clear communication
  • A fun and supportive nature
  • The ability to use your initiative
  • No hesitation to play and get messy
  • The energy to be on the go with the students
  • A calm approach, even under pressure
  • Willingness to support with personal care such as nappies and toilet training
  • Ability to plan and deliver effective lessons to small groups of students

Don't just take our word for it, hear what our students have to say!

Background

As a Teacher with us, you will embark on our 12 week on-boarding programme completing a variety of in-house training and development courses to allow you to learn about each student and how you can best support them. You will also have the opportunity to continuously gain new skills during your career with us, whether this is learning sign language, becoming a training tutor yourself or completing NVQ qualifications to allow you to progress within the charity.
