Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
Sacred Heart Primary is a small, Roman Catholic school in Penicuik. Its catchment covers the whole area of Penicuik and outlying areas including Carlops, Howden and Glencorse. After P7, children transfer to St David’s RC High, Penicuik High or Beeslack High Schools. Currently there are 107 children in our Primary classes and 20 places in both the morning and afternoon nursery classes.
Accommodation consists of a nursery, an Early Years’ base with two classrooms, an Upper Years’ base with three classrooms, a Support for Learning base, a ‘noisy/ quiet’ room, an ICT suite, a hall, a resource room and offices. The grounds have been recently developed to include a perimeter cycle path, growing areas an amphitheatre and an Outdoor Classroom.
Sacred Heart has a happy, caring school ethos where everyone is valued and nurtured. Our children are well behaved, enthusiastic learners with supportive parents. The staff work hard, to ensure all learners reach their full potential. Working with parents and partner agencies is key in the work of the school. Because we strive to meet the needs of the whole child a comprehensive Outdoor Learning Programme has been developed: this includes the Forest Schools’ programme from P1 to participating in the John Muir Award programme in P6 and 7. All pupils from P4 participate in annual Residential Experiences.
Our Parent Partnership meets monthly to support parent engagement in the learning and teaching in the school and to support the organisation of events.
