As part of our continued growth, we now have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Teacher to join our close-knit team at The Shires in Stretton, Rutland. The Shires is an independent, specialist day and residential school located in Stretton, Rutland. The Shires caters for young people aged 10 – 19 years who have communication and learning challenges associated with Autism.  We are a fully integrated community made up of a range of professionals from different backgrounds employed to meet the diverse needs of the young people and families that we support. A place at The Shires Autism School ensures that a young person’s life becomes worthwhile, however mild or profound their autism, we have a range of facilities which support the way that young people learn, socialise and play together. Our wrap around care and teaching approach enhances our young people’s lives, making them as independent as they are able to be, and having a positive impact on the whole family.

The Shires is part of the Acorn Care and Education Group, the second largest private sector provider of special needs education in the country operating 17 schools for children and young people who have a range of social, emotional and mental health needs and also pupils who have been diagnosed with autism or demonstrate behaviours associated with autism.

About the Role

Joining our team of dedicated teachers, you will be responsible for providing high quality teaching of a range of subjects, to ensure the effective delivery of the school’s curriculum. The teachers at The Shires are encouraged to take a creative approach, seeking ways to positively engage with and motivate pupils through lessons that promote learning and raise levels of attainment.

The ideal candidate will successfully set targets for pupil success and be confident in using their knowledge and expertise to monitor progress. Teachers at The Shires give regular feedback and encourage our young people to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for a Teacher who wants to spend less time on paperwork and more time developing creative learning opportunities for the most reluctant and troubled learners.

No two days are the same at The Shires so we want Teachers who can work at pace to turn ‘can’t do’ into ‘want to’ and are motivated by working with children with complex needs. You will be motivated by your belief that every child can achieve and reach their potential.  The ideal candidate will be resilient, have a calm and engaging demeanour and enjoy working with young people. 

Whilst previous experience of working in within a SEN environment would be desirable, excellent teaching skills and the right motivation, personal qualities and levels of resilience are just as important. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching English and/or Maths. 

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent
  • Successful teaching experience of students with special education needs
  • Experience of working with students who display challenging behaviour
  • Ability to use ICT effectively for teaching
  • Knowledge of guidance and requirements around safeguarding children.
  • Knowledge & understanding of the National Curriculum in order for successful planning and delivery
  • The ability to manage challenging behaviour effectively
  • Resilience and perseverance
