Job overview

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join East Lothian Council’s new Communication Provision Knox Academy Meadowpark for secondary aged pupils with autism and communication difficulties (severe and complex needs) who require a highly individualised and adapted approach to teaching and learning. The provision provides places for currently up to 18 secondary pupils (to rise to a maximum of 30 pupils in the next few years) from across the county and is housed in a newly refurbished Victorian infant school close to Knox Academy.

The Provision offers pupils and staff extensive facilities including a sensory room, activity room, fully accessible meeting area, staff base, therapy rooms as well as generous outdoor space and ICT support. There is also a fully fitted apartment for pupils to develop independent living skills as they reach the Senior Phase.

Knox Academy Meadowpark aims to provide each pupil with an individualised curriculum according to his/her identified strengths and needs. Staff focus on developing communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, using symbols, photographs, objects, signing, written words and augmentative communication aids. Staff seek to promote the ability of each pupil to perform tasks necessary for life after school, to the highest level possible (including national qualifications) across all areas of the curriculum.

Staff work very closely with a range of professionals from education services, health personnel, social work and other organisations offering specialist services to our young people to offer the best possible co-ordinated support necessary to ensure our pupils will benefit from school education.

This post requires a dynamic teacher with a strong background in working with pupils with autism/severe and complex needs, their families and associated professionals.

Applications from teachers qualified to teach any STEM subject(s) to national levels would be highly desirable but not essential, to complement our current staff specialisms.

Located in East Lothian, Scotland, Knox Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Named after a 16th century theologian, Knox Academy can trace its roots back to the 14th century, but is more directly descended from a 19th century grammar school. The school has seen extensive redevelopment over the years, and has around 800 pupils in total, making it average-sized compared to other secondary schools of its type. The school can boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium and large laying fields.

Values and Vision

Knox Academy runs an asymmetrical school week, making it unusual compared to many other British schools. Monday to Thursday, pupils attend six periods a day finishing at 4pm, whilst on Fridays they only attend three periods, leaving school at midday. The school works hard to provide a diverse curriculum suitable for all pupils, taking great pride in its comprehensive ethos. Outside the classroom, the school runs its own “Children’s University” for younger students, with them taking part in trips and learning opportunities in conjunction with a local university.

Education Scotland Inspection

“The headteacher is successfully engaging with a range of partners in the local community, including businesses. These partnerships successfully enhance the curriculum and increase young people’s successes and achievements. As a result of the school’s increasing community links, young people are engaged in volunteering and develop their leadership skills through working with local organisations.”
