Mossbourne Herd Lane Academy (MHLA)

Mossbourne Herd Lane Academy is a ‘Good’ school with a strong heritage at the heart of its community, where many families—and indeed some staff—have longstanding connections with the school. This sense of belonging underpins our shared ambition for every child to “Be the Best that they Can Be.” Through an inclusive and aspirational curriculum, our experienced and committed team secures strong outcomes while preparing pupils confidently for secondary education and beyond. Our specialist speech and language provision and wide range of enrichment opportunities are central to the rich offer we provide.

We pride ourselves on a safe, secure and inclusive environment where every child is supported to achieve and thrive. From Nursery to Year 6, staff are united in ensuring that each pupil receives what they need to succeed, through high-quality teaching, strong pastoral care and a nurturing ethos.

Our curriculum combines carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich learning with memorable experiences that bring learning to life. A clear focus on reading, writing and oracy, alongside a wealth of clubs, trips and opportunities for leadership and responsibility, ensures that children develop beyond the academic. As a result, pupils leave Herd Lane as confident, well-rounded individuals, ready for the next stage of their education.

The Mossbourne Federation

The Mossbourne Federation is a thriving network of Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form academies providing the children of Hackney and Thurrock with an outstanding education from Early Years to Post-16. We deliver the highest quality of teaching and learning across a broad curriculum, underpinned by high expectations for every student and by our Federation values of: ‘Excellence’, ‘No Excuses’ and ‘Unity’. Our staff strive towards a common goal: being the best we can be, ensuring every pupil, every teacher, and every member of staff, fulfils their potential. We value continuous improvement, are always learning, and we are always looking for a better way to do things. We are a supportive family that shares experiences, knowledge, and ideas in an environment that welcomes input and challenge.

Mossbourne Federation staff know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We do not discriminate in recruitment or during employment based on any protected characteristic or aspect of individual identity. We have committed to being an Anti-Racist organisation, and we welcome individuals with the ethos and energy to help us achieve this goal. We actively reject discrimination in our academies through continuous review of our working policies and practices across the federation, including at board level. We are committed to developing and supporting inclusivity, diversity, and anti-racism in every facet of what we do.

The Mossbourne Ethos

The Mossbourne Federation is the realisation of Sir Clive Bourne’s dream to provide the children of Hackney with an outstanding education. Since 2004, the Federation has nurtured Sir Clive’s dream by fostering kind, courteous, hard-working, and well-rounded learners by providing an outstanding education based on the core values of ‘Excellence’, ‘No Excuses’ and ‘Unity’. Through upholding these core values, Mossbourne’s London schools have built a reputation for being, without exception, exceptional.

We are delighted that on 1st January 2025, Mossbourne expanded to include three new academies in Thurrock, Essex.

The Federation’s calm working atmosphere creates well-rounded individuals who excel in the arts, on the sporting field and academically. All learners, regardless of ability, benefit from the innovative and enlightened approaches to teaching and learning within The Mossbourne Federation.
