Main Purpose of Post

To teach pupils and students who have severe, profound or complex learning difficulties and Autism.You will be a member of a department team and will teach within your department and in other departments as required.To promote a happy, safe and nurturing learning environment for all our students.

Main Tasks

The professional duties of a teacher are those set out in the Teachers Pay and Conditions of Employment  Act, together with the additional duties set out by the Governors of the School.To promote the Council’s and the School Governor’s Equal Opportunity Policy and other policies set out by the Governors of the School.


• To assess the needs of students and plan individual learning targets to their needs.

• To assess the effectiveness of the individual targets you have set.

• To teach groups of students and subjects as required.

• To lead and co-ordinate the work of the staff in your class.

• To make use of the resources within the community by organising education visits to support areas of the curriculum.

• To attend, as required, appropriate meetings about students you teach.

• To use ICT to support teaching and learning in all areas.

Tutor Role

• To ensure individual targets are set in each curriculum area each term and that the end of year report is completed for all students in your tutor group.

• To lead the statutory annual education review for students in your tutor group.

• To ensure that staff throughout the school understand the behaviour, feeding and other specific needs of students in your tutor group.

• To attend, as required, appropriate meetings about students in your tutor group.

Record Keeping

• To use ICT to keep student records up to date by implementing the record keeping systems used in School.

• To use ICT to write reports concerning students you teach who are in your tutor group.

Home/School Links

• To actively develop communication with parents and carers.

• To maintain contact with parents/carers through the home-school diary and other preferred method.

• To be present and contribute to parents meetings, parents evenings and open days for parents.

Curriculum Management

• To take responsibility as a curriculum co-ordinator for the management and organisation of an agreed area(s) of the curriculum.

• To manage the budget for that area(s).

Staff Development

• To take an active part in the School’s Staff Development Programme.

• To take part in a Professional Development Review with the Performance Management Cycle.


• To be actively involved in promoting and supporting inclusive experiences for all students both within Brentwood School and in other local schools and the local community.


• To actively promote safe practices to ensure the wellbeing of the students.

• To follow the school’s safeguarding policy

• To be aware of and follow the School’s Health and Safety Guidelines.

• To understand and actively promote the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy and guidelines.
