Job overview
£23,800 - £27,500 per annum PRO RATA (part time, term-time only). This equates to approximately £12.75-£14.50 per hour, depending on experience, and includes an allowance for holidays. Salaries are due to be reviewed Autumn 2020 and may be increased but this cannot be guaranteed.
Co-op Academies Trust was set up by the Co-op Group, following its initial sponsorship of two schools in 2010. We have now grown to 25 academies with plans for further expansion. The Trust exists to add social value. It does this through working effectively in socially and economically challenging areas having an unflinching focus on academy improvement and demonstrating a full commitment to co-operative values and the Ways of Being Co-op.
The Trust is seeking to establish a new team of governance clerks to deliver a high quality and comprehensive clerking service to our academy local governing bodies (LGBs) based in the following areas: Leeds (5 schools), Bradford (7 schools), Kirklees (1 school), Greater Manchester (6 schools and 1 sixth form college), Salford (2 schools), Wirral (3 schools) and Stoke/Staffordshire (2 schools).
This is an exciting opportunity to join our governance team, which will include access to regular team meetings and training. Successful candidates will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, be able to work independently and to organise their own time whilst working to strict deadlines. The role will include providing advice to governors on constitutional and procedural matters in accordance with our Trust’s governance approach and the wider regulatory framework. Clerks will provide meeting support to their assigned LGBs, including minuting meetings to a high standard, under the guidance of our regional Governance Managers. Successful applicants will be expected to have substantial clerking experience and have already completed the National Clerks’ Development Programme or to be prepared to commence it during the first six months of their employment.
Your support of effective governance in the Trust will contribute towards improving the life chances of the children and young people in our academies, and improving the communities our academies serve.
The roles are term-time only and part time, and hours will be flexible across the year, to meet the needs of the governing bodies. The number of hours worked will depend on the location and the number of academies clerked, with specific arrangements being discussed and agreed with successful applicants. The majority of LGB meetings take place in the late afternoon or early evening. A flexible approach to working hours is essential as successful candidates may be asked to service additional meetings in order to meet the governance needs of the Trust (for example pupil disciplinary committees, complaints panels, HR hearings) or to provide cover for other team members in their absence.
Please indicate on your application the geographical area(s) you are interested in and the number of hours you could potentially work.
The roles will have an office base in one of our regional hub offices (Bradford, Manchester or Stoke), but flexible working is encouraged and much of the work could potentially be undertaken from home. Attendance at academies for meetings is required, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. A laptop and mobile phone will be provided.
The Co-op Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all its staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Captivating minds through co-operation
Through a great education we are changing the lives of young people. Built on the same principles as all cooperatives across the world, we work with academies to empower teachers and young people to work together for a better education and a better community.
We have been recognised by the Sutton Trust Charity and the Education Policy Institute as one of the top performing multi-academy trusts for disadvantaged students. What makes our Trust unique is that we are sponsored by the Co-op Group.
That close relationship means that we benefit from all of the business expertise that has seen the Co-op grow to one of the most respected, ethically driven and successful businesses in the country. Popular with students, parents and teachers, we began in 2010 with just two academies. One in Manchester and one in Stoke-on-Trent. Two years later, in 2012, we began to work with a cluster of academies in Leeds and by 2014 we had five academies in Leeds; made up of one secondary and four primary academies. Pragmatic in our approach to growth we worked closely and co-operatively to improve all of our academies. We now have 28 academies across Greater Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, The Wirral and West Yorkshire.
Our Values
Co-op Academies Trust is committed to the values shared by cooperatives everywhere:
Self-help – we support learners, parents, carers and staff to help themselves
Self-responsibility – we encourage learners, parents, carers and staff to take responsibility for, and answer to their actions
Democracy – we give our learners, parents, carers and staff a say in the way we run our schools
Equality – we believe that the voice of each individual should be heard
Equity – we run our schools in a way that is fair and unbiased
Solidarity – we share interests and common purposes with our learners, parents, carers and staff, and with other schools in the communities we serve
We strive to demonstrate the following ethical values in everything we do:
Openness – we believe in being open with colleagues in our schools and beyond, children and their families, sharing information and ideas to raise standards and life chances
Honesty – we act in a professional and respectful manner in our dealings with everyone
Social responsibility – we maximise our impact on the people in our communities while minimising our footprint on the world
Caring for others – we treat everyone as we wish to be treated ourselves, understanding that children only have one childhood
We use our simple ‘Ways of Being Co-op’ to demonstrate our values:
• Do what matters most
• Be yourself, always
• Show you care
• Succeed together
