 College Counsellor

Commencing as soon as possible until the end of the 2019 school year with the possibility of continuance


As a School Counsellor, you will be an integral part of a school’s pastoral care support and will work with students, families and school staff to maximise educational outcomes for students.


Selection Criteria:

  • A Registered Psychologist/Social Worker/Counsellor with experience in facilitating and monitoring emotional, behavioural, social and educational counselling for students. Social Workers and Counsellors must be eligibility for membership to a relevant association (AASW, PACFA, ACA). Psychologist must be eligible for registration with AHPRA.
  • A strong understanding of the professional body’s ethical and legal requirements, especially in relation to working within a school setting.
  • Excellent communication skills with the proven ability to work collaboratively with teaching teams, and to engage and relate to students, parents and staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child adolescent development, and experience in youth mental health interventions.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to take an active part in the full life of the College and to support, accept, and uphold the mission, teachings and ethos of the Catholic Church’s work in schools.
  • Proven experience and ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations and to students presenting with complex needs.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in providing group based evidence based interventions with children and young people.

About St John Paul College Coffs Harbour

St John Paul College is a mixed, non-selective, independent, Roman Catholic secondary school in New South Wales, serving students from the age of 11-18. The secondary school is situated in Coffs Harbour.

Formerly John Paul College, the school was renamed St John Paul College in 2014 following the canonization of Pope John Paul II. The school was founded in 1982 by the parishes in Coffs Harbour and Sawtell, and opened in 1983 with the assistance of the Sisters of Mercy.
