Felsted is a leading day and boarding independent school based in a stunning village campus in North Essex. Founded in 1564 by Richard Lord Riche, who had been a Lord Chancellor under King Edward VI, Felsted today provides an exceptional holistic education to approximately 1100 boys and girls aged four to eighteen. We celebrated our 450th anniversary in 2014, one of only a handful of Schools in the country that have claimed this historic milestone. We employ more than 160 teachers and 440 operational staff in a community orientated environment, ensuring our pupils receive the very best in learning and co-curricular activities.
We have an opportunity for a suitably qualified individual with prior military experience to join our ‘Excellent’ rated Day and Boarding School as a Combined Cadet Force School Staff Instructor.
Our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is one of the six oldest CCFs in the country. Alongside Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Rossall and Hurstpierpoint, Felsted School raised a Cadet Corps in 1860. However, we claim the primary place in this list as military training started at the School on an unofficial basis under the Headmaster’s direction before the War Office letter of 12 May 1859 inviting schools and universities to raise Volunteer Corps. Currently, our CCF has an establishment of 190 Army Cadets and 30 RAF Cadets from Year 9 through to Year 12. There are seven Officers in the Army Section and one in the RAF Section.
From our Junior Leaders programme (Year 9) all the way through to the Junior Under Officers (U6), our young cadets are tested in controlled environments and the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance are promoted. Our training programme has been meticulously planned in order to give each and every cadet the chance to try new skills, work under pressure and experience new activities.
Many of our U6 cadets hold senior appointments within the school such as Head of School and Senior Prefects. By their own admission, they have said that a major contribution to them achieving these roles of responsibility is in part due to their time in the CCF.
The School Staff Instructor (SSI) is employed by the school and is directly responsible to the Contingent Commander (CC). The SSI is to assist the CC in the efficient management of the Contingent and in other duties as directed by the Headmaster. A full job description can be found within the ‘Role Information Pack’ and further information on our CCF programme can be found here.
This role is a permanent position working full-time during term-time only (34 weeks per year) between Monday and Saturday, plus School camps, expeditions and preparation work as required during the School Holidays. The starting salary for this role is c.£35,000 per annum depending on skills, knowledge and experience. An allowance is paid by the MoD.
Benefits include free life assurance and parking, contributory pension scheme, lunch on full days worked, unlimited use of the Felsted Gym and pool facilities, on-site 'Aroma' by Caffé Nero Coffee Shop and membership to Felsted Connect; an online multi-platform engagement tool where employees have access to hundreds of exclusive discounts and offers from online and high-street retailers.
Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 01 December 2017 at 12:00 noon.
Interviews will be held on Monday 04 and Tuesday 05 December 2017

About Felsted School
Felsted School
Felsted was named ‘Boarding School of the Year’ by the prestigious Times Educational Supplement and it’s easy to see why.
Our beautiful 90-acre countryside campus is the setting for an education for day pupils as well as our boarders that is exciting and inspiring. We embrace modern teaching methods and technology while celebrating the traditions of our 460+ year history too. All this is just an hour away from both London and Cambridge, and 20 minutes from Stansted Airport.
At Felsted, pupils aged four to 18 have everything they need to grow and thrive.
Classes are small throughout our independent school and every pupil is treated as an individual, encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, discover new interests and build on their passions.
From our youngest Felstedians in the Prep School starting on their learning journey, to our Sixth Form students in the Senior School who are busy studying at either A Level or the successful International Baccalaureate programme, every child has the space to grow and thrive so that they can go out into the world and make a difference.
Our education is broad, inclusive, inspiring and considered. Absorbing knowledge is of no use to our students if they do not have the skills and sensitivities to apply it in real-world situations, so there is an all-pervading emphasis across both the academic and co-curricular programme on developing the personal attributes and characteristics that will enable each student to make an active contribution to society and to find fulfilment in life.
Along the way, they discover their own strengths as well as talents and interests that often become life-long passions. Whether the arts, sports, adventure and leadership, or perhaps debating or engineering, there are infinite opportunities for students to grow through participation in all Felsted has to offer.
This happens under the guidance of teaching and non-teaching staff who are dedicated to supporting young people as they discover their own characters and what fascinates and drives them. Resilience, self-belief and integrity, as well as understanding and respect for others are key, as is the skill and joy of working together towards meaningful achievements.
Our brand values are the truths that Felsted aspires to operate by every day and underpins everything we do. Upholding these values is a measure by which we can judge our success.
