Job overview

CCF SSI REQUIRED FROM SEPTEMBER 2024

(You must have the right to work in the UK to apply for this position)

King’s Bruton is an HMC co-educational boarding and day school of 360+ pupils aged 13-18.

A well-qualified, ambitious and dynamic School Staff Instructor (SSI) is required to support the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at King’s Bruton. The SSI, under the direction of the Contingent Commander is integral to the successful running of the CCF. As SSI, you will have responsibility for training cadets, supporting field training and camps, overseeing the CCF administration, and will be responsible for the security of the buildings and equipment.

The Combined Cadet Force at King’s School, Bruton is one of the oldest CCFs in the country and celebrated its centenary in 2010. Consisting of both the Army and Navy sections, the CCF remains very popular, with strong uptake across the year groups. The CCF programme helps to encourage those pupils with an interest in the services, with an increasing number of Old Brutonians joining the armed forces. Recently, this included an Old Brutonian who received the Sword of Honour from King Charles III at Sandhurst in April 2023.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a thriving CCF contingent, and to support an exciting programme of training and events for cadets. The role would suit an individual with strong military experience and the relevant cadet qualifications. The successful candidate will need to have strong organisational skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work closely with colleagues across all areas of the school.

Both full and part-time positions will be considered for the right candidate.

Values and vision

King’s Bruton is a smaller independent school and, as such, its values and vision revolve around the tight-knit community of students that it has cultivated. The Somerset school promotes a sense of loyalty, determination and encourages pupils to go above and beyond both in and out of the classroom.

Emphasis is placed on inclusivity and promoting diversity within the school. King’s Bruton aims to foster a culture of acceptance and respect in all aspects of school life.

ISI report

“Relationships between staff and between pupils themselves are appropriate, and in their questionnaire responses the vast majority of boarders agree that they get on well together and feel safe in their boarding house. Staff are dedicated to the welfare of all pupils and provide a suitable structure for them to develop and thrive. Pastoral policies and procedures are effective and good behaviour is promoted.”
