Job overview

Computing Teacher (to include A-level teaching)

This is a rare chance to join an academic department of computer science at a top selective boys’ school in Sutton, South London. Sutton Grammar School has extremely able and (mostly) well-behaved pupils and a very low turnover of staff. Applications are welcomed from computer science teachers who can deliver interesting lessons and who are committed to their continuing professional development.

The department is growing and this is the second full time teaching post in the department, which is also supported by a technical support team of two. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with Sharon Corkery, the Head of Computing, to ensure that all pupils are offered the best possible opportunities to succeed from year 7 through to A-level in computer science.

There are four air-conditioned computer labs – three of them in a row with the network hubs, office and technical areas adjacent; a smaller room adjacent to the art suite is equipped with computers for graphic art and for the teaching of A-level computer science.

Sutton Grammar School is a selective school for 910 boys, graded outstanding by Ofsted, The academically selective intake has recently increased to 135 boys (from 120) in each year and this growth continues for three more years.

We seek a new member of the computing department to teach computing from year 7 to A-level. A senior member of staff currently teaches the A-level classes and from September he will be working part time for the school in his management functions and not in a teaching capacity. There is scope for the new member of staff to lead the teaching of our A-level teaching of computer science while also contributing to the teaching of the subject throughout the school.

Applicants should be qualified teachers. We offer very good support to NQTs. We want the best teacher we can get to enthuse our students about computer science and to take forward their programming skills into the sixth form. Preference will be given to applicants with good knowledge of C-based programming languages. Some very able boys are taking the subject in the sixth form and since the first group of GCSE computer science students in 2015 the numbers choosing A-level has increased from about 2 per year to about 10-15 per year. The department encourages participation in competitions like the BEBRAS Computational Challenge and other teachers in the school are expert in the use of computer control in electronic projects for which the school has a national reputation. Apps for Good is one competition that is pursued by all boys in year 9 as part of our computer science curriculum

Extra-curricular contributions are also welcomed and you may have other skills to offer (e.g. computer science, sport, interest in CCF, STEM projects, music,.....). The school greatly values this side of school life and we are always looking for new colleagues to support activities beyond their teaching subject. STEM project work is especially well developed and we offer the boys opportunities to carry out scientific studies that result in several of them gaining national or international awards each year. You could be part of this exciting work too.

Come and teach at a friendly and successful school where staff turnover is very low.

See the attached documents for a fuller description of the school and department.

Headmaster: Mr Gordon Ironside
Head of Computing: Mrs Sharon Corkery

About Sutton Grammar School

Introduction

Sutton Grammar School is a five form entry boys' grammar school. It moved to the current site in 1928 and in recent years has added several new buildings to cope with the growth of pupil numbers. It is one of five selective schools in Sutton serving this suburb on the edge of London. From September 2017 girls have been admitted to the sixth form. We seek to provide a well rounded education with extra curricular contributions highly valued and supported - including lots of participation in drama, music, CCF and DofE. STEM project work is especially well developed with many national and international awards for individual students and teams.

Almost all students aspire to go to university and we place more than our fair share at the top institutions. We value the breadth and balance of our curriculum and seek parental support to sustain smaller subjects in the sixth form.

Location

Sutton Grammar School (post code SM1 4AS) is located near Sutton town centre in a residential area just behind the High Street. The railway station is only 5 minutes walk away and many bus routes radiate from Sutton town centre. The school owns excellent playing fields in Northey Avenue (Cheam).

Sutton is a London Borough but is on the edge of London so is conveniently close to London for its social life (train 25 minutes to Victoria) but is more affordable to buy or rent and is within minutes of the countryside.

All of Sutton's schools are very good and the borough is regularly in the top few authorities for school results.

Attraction for Teachers

The school is an attractive place to work and develop one's career. We have been a hub school for biology in the local Training School Partnership, and a regular provider of PGCE placements for other subjects too. Trained mentors are therefore available to support our own NQTs. There is a full programme of CPD for all staff, with a lot of sharing of expertise within the school. We have a single staff room and therefore all staff socialise together and we try to involve all staff to support their well-being. There is a staff badminton club, spin classes and the sports hall and gym can be freely used by staff. Tea and coffee are available in the staff room. Wide staff participation in school sport and supporting clubs and activities contributes to it being a busy but engaged staff team. We look to retain the loyalty of staff by being as flexible as possible when staff want to become part time or need to change aspects of their working arrangements. Teachers are assisted by an outstanding team of support staff - not great in number but highly capable and flexible. The pupil roll is currently 1,023 with 345 in the sixth form. The school is heavily oversubscribed and has an excellent reputation for its extra curricular programme as well as its strong academic results. It is a science and maths specialist school, but seeks and achieves high standards across all curriculum areas. Staff turnover is low which is an excellent indicator that this is a very good school to work in. Newly qualified teachers are always welcome but experience is also valued and for each post we look for the best person that will enthuse young people and complement the skills of our existing team.
