St Mary’s Primary Bellingen and Mt St John Primary Dorrigo are small Catholic primary schools on the Mid North Coast.  The schools foster a commitment to the individual student and provide opportunities for academic, cultural and sporting achievement. The schools see education as a partnership between parents, families, parish, community and the school. 

The position is for 2 days a week at both schools. 

SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

Part-time (4 days per week)

The School Counsellor position will be offered for three years commencing 28 January 2020 through to 26 January 2023. 


The role of the School Counsellor is to support and assist school teams to better understand and manage student mental health issues, with a view to improving student outcomes.

As a School Counsellor, you will be an integral part of a school’s pastoral care support and will work with students, families, school staff and external agencies to maximise educational and wellbeing outcomes for students.


Selection Criteria to be addressed with your application:

• Current registration with Psychology Board of Australia; or membership of Australian Association of Social Workers Association or membership of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia)/ ACA (Australian Counselling Association).

• A strong understanding of the professional body’s ethical and legal requirements, especially in relation to working within a school setting.

• Excellent communication skills with the proven ability to work collaboratively with teaching teams, and to engage and relate to students, families and staff.

• Demonstrated understanding of child adolescent development and youth mental health interventions.

• Ability to work independently with limited supervision and manage caseloads.

• Willingness to take an active part in the full life of the school and to support, accept, and uphold the mission, teachings and ethos of the Catholic Church’s work in schools.


Desirable Criteria:

• Experience in providing evidence based interventions with children and young people, individually and in groups.

• Proven experience and ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations and to students presenting with complex needs.

• Experience or willingness to provide professional learning to school staff and families.

About St Mary’s Primary School BELLINGEN

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is a co-educational school for students in Kindergarten - Year 6 located in North Sydney, NSW. The school has approximately 325 students and 23 teaching staff.

The school was founded in 1888 by the Marist Brothers as a secondary school, but became a primary school in 1956. The school recruits teaching staff who can educate and motivate students to succeed, within the school’s Christian framework.

The school is currently undergoing building works, so that they can expand their educational offerings, with new learning facilities commencing construction in 2017. The school offers modern classrooms, a well-appointed library with technology access, outdoor play areas, and dedicated spaces for sciences and arts. 

Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the NSW Key Learning Areas: English, mathematics, science and technology, human society and environment, creative arts, and health and personal development. Students also study religious education and French language. There is also a focus on technology and robotics, and all students participate in public speaking and debating. 

High-achieving students can also partake in the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program. Special needs teachers also work with students in small groups for those who need additional support. Popular extra-curricular activities include sports, arts, and drama.
