About us

At Bath Spa University we work with one clear vision: to be a leading university in creativity, culture and enterprise. And we place collaboration at the heart of everything we do. With ever growing student numbers, we make sure our people are engaged and empowered by blending digital technologies, international perspectives, work-oriented connections and inspirational teaching. Together we're on a journey to transform our students' lives. And it starts with people like you.

Our Initial Teacher Education Partnership was rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted in October 2015. Our Bath Spa Teachers are highly employable and our Partnership reflects our excellent relationships with regional schools, teaching school alliances and together, we offer exceptional opportunities to those who train with us.

The Maths Enhancement Course (MEC) at Bath Spa University (BSU) serves the South West region. It prepares those without a specialist degree with the necessary subject knowledge to train to teach Mathematics. All the students on the course will have been offered an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) place on a Postgraduate Certificate of Education course (PGCE) leading to qualification as a Teacher of Mathematics. The overall aim of the course is for the participants to develop a deep understanding of the maths curriculum at KS3 and 4, with some understanding of A level mathematics. Upon completion of the MEC, students should not only feel confident to enter the classroom secure in their subject knowledge but also with the motivation and enthusiasm for teaching.

The Secondary PGCE programme sits within the Institute of Education and offers exciting and innovative training in collaboration with local schools. The Maths pathway offers a secure training to support Bath Spa teachers both academically and professionally towards the award of PGCE with QTS.

About the role

This role requires you to lead, develop and teach a wide range of topics on the Maths Enhancement Course using creative and innovative methods which at all times model a range of excellent classroom pedagogy and practice. It is expected that the qualifications of the students in the class will vary so differentiation will be very important in order to meet the varying needs of individuals. The role will include one to one tutorials, commenting on weekly reviews and helping students become reflective learners, setting and marking assessments – both formative and summative, providing feedback and developing appropriate developmental work for self study periods. You will also work closely with the subject tutor for Mathematics and play a part in the delivery of the PGCE Mathematics course and PGCE more generally.

About you (requirements)

You will have QTS, an appropriate degree, and knowledge of the standards and requirements for initial teacher education. You will also have recent experience of working in a school or other educational provider, as well as developing curriculum and managing resources appropriate to GCSE and A level in Mathematics. You will also have knowledge and understanding of wider generic issues in education and of the changing landscape of Teacher Education. You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communications skills plus the ability to work independently or in collaboration with others. You will also have good administrative and management skills
