Inclusion School is a independent non-maintained special school, with places funded by Local Authorities, established to support the social, emotional and mental health complexities of young people and enable them to access a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum through a nurturing, safe and inclusive environment.

Working as Inclusion School’s SEN cover supervisor, and as part of the school’s engagement team, you will be part of a close, supportive team working to teach and develop young people who have struggled to access education due to their mental ill health, anxieties and difficulties attending school through empathy, nurture and patience.

We are as passionate about our staff’s mental health and wellbeing as we are about our learners’ which is why we are a Leeds Beckett University Carnegie Gold Medal winner and a mental health champion with our Employee Assistance Programme.

Key responsibilities

  • To supervise classes of up to 6 learners during the short-term absence of teachers as provided by a teacher 
  • Supervise and engage learners in positive  constructive educational activities
  • Keep appropriate records as agreed with the teacher
  • Promote the school’s ethos, values, and positive behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging learners to take responsibility and reflect on their own behaviour
  • Collect any completed learning after the lesson, returning it to the appropriate teacher and providing feedback on the lesson
  • Act as a role model and set high expectations of conduct and behaviour
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all learners within the classroom
  • Develop positive and nurturing relationships with learners in order to support their social, emotional and learning needs
  • When not supervising classes, to contribute to the engagement team’s purpose of supporting learning inside and outside of the classroom through positive engagement and activities
  • Writing, contributing and implementing individual education plans, making assessments of educational attainment, setting challenging yet achievable targets
  • Support learners to progress towards personal and academic goals and targets
  • Work as part of a team to incorporate agreed strategies in supporting mental health and SEND and meeting the individual needs of learners
  • Maintain registers, evaluations, academic and SEMH progress monitoring (and other records as necessary)
  • To encourage all learners to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets


Person specification

  • An outgoing, positive and engaging person who values relationship building with young people to improve their wellbeing and education 
  • Kind, nurturing and patience  
  • Resilient, hardworking and a collaborative team member
  • Be experienced in or have an interest working within an SEN setting, supporting children and young people with mental health needs and SEN (e.g. depression, Autism)
  • Experience of learning strategies and behaviour management and experience in planning and implementing is desirable
