Job overview

Thank you for your interest in Ocklynge Junior School and for considering us as your next career move. We hope our application pack is clear and informative and gives you a sense of our high aspirations for all our pupils.

Ocklynge Junior School joined with Ratton Secondary School on the 1st of December 2017 to form the South Downs Learning Trust. The aim of our trust is to provide an outstanding educational experience for all pupils in our schools. We want both schools to retain their own identity whilst working together to support the learning of everyone in the Trust community.

Our aim is to develop a sustainable and exciting educational experience that places our pupils at the centre of all that we do.

We are seeking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to supervise prepared lessons in the absence of a class teacher, ensuring that in doing so the pupils’ learning and development is continued and maintained. You will need to have the ability to communicate the work set by the class teacher to the pupils; ensuring that they are aware of expectations for both behaviour and task completion and will also work closely with teaching staff to plan and deliver high quality, challenging and motivating learning experiences. You will be able to establish strong working relationships with staff and pupils alike, be able to work as part of a team and will be a reliable and excellent communicator in line with the requirements of this responsible role.

This position may suit recently qualified graduates or someone seeking a route into teaching.

If you have a genuine desire to make a positive difference to the lives and futures of our pupils, then we would love to hear from you. To help you learn more about our school and this role please see the job description and person specification in this job pack. The person specification contains the criteria that the selection panel will use in the selection process, and they will be particularly interested in the unique qualities that you possess.

We offer an incentive package which includes:

  • A comprehensive induction programme for new staff to the academy.
  • On-going investment into your career development through appropriate CPD.
  • Support and mentoring by a strong Senior Leadership Team and other experienced leaders.
  • Access to the Bike 2 Work scheme allowing up to 42% discount on the cost of bikes and equipment.
  • Full use of an employee assistance programme supporting wellbeing.
  • Staffroom with complimentary tea and coffee.
  • Subsidised membership of Benenden Healthcare (affordable alternative to private health insurance).
  • On-site parking.
  • Free Breakfast Club/After School Club place for staff children at Ocklynge Junior School.
  • Enviable setting and extensive grounds.

We look forward to receiving your application and hearing why you believe you have the passion, commitment and talent to join Ocklynge Junior School.

History and Values

Established in September 1972 through the merger of St Mary's Boys School and Ocklynge Girls School, Ocklynge Junior School caters to children aged 7 to 11 and is presently home to an enrolment of approximately 840 pupils. Operating as an integral part of the South Downs Learning Trust, the school has seen multiple expansions and improvements in its infrastructure over the years. From a sizeable multi-purpose hall with a stage to a dedicated theatre for creative arts like drama and dance, a music room, practical spaces for art and craft, and a refurbished library, the facilities cater to various needs. Furthermore, the school boasts a swimming pool, a floodlit multi-use games area, a fully equipped computer room, and a versatile 'pavilion' housing additional classrooms, spaces for extracurricular activities, individual music lessons, and sports changing facilities.

Mission and Objectives

At Ocklynge Junior School, the mission is to foster the holistic development of children, aiming for the following key objectives:

  • Realising each child's maximum potential.
  • Cultivating inquisitive minds and the ability to focus on tasks.
  • Developing self-reliance, confidence, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Celebrating every child's achievements and contributions.
  • Instilling values of respect for religious and moral beliefs, as well as tolerance for diversity in races, religions, and ways of life.
  • Teaching values of courtesy, good manners, and consideration for others.

School Organisation

The school operates with six mixed-ability classes in each year group, with 35 pupils in every class. These classes are meticulously assembled when children join in Year 3 from feeder infant schools. Each class is led by a teacher, supported by a trained assistant offering extra guidance to individuals or small groups. Additionally, each year group has a senior teacher functioning as Head of Year or phase, coordinating the activities of the entire year group.
