JOB DESCRIPTION

DANCE TEACHER

Shawnigan is seeking a highly motivated and talented Dance Teacher for September 2022. The Dance Teacher will provide exceptional curricular and co-curricular dance opportunities within and outside the Shawnigan community, including through exciting programs and performances, marketing, involvement with admissions and development of possible summer programs

Preference will  be to given to qualified teachers who are a) academically multi-disciplinary b) can offer expertise, experience and enthusiasm in co-curricular activities c) are committed to contributing to our boarding campus and community and d) can contribute to the delivery of our strategic plan, Project Future. 

Previous experience of the British Columbia curriculum and/or Advanced Placement and/or internationally recognized academic curricula is required.


ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to both the Assistant Head, Academics and the Fine Arts Academic Department Head, teachers are expected to:

  • Carry assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigan’s prep, planning and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession;
  • Contribute to the co-curricular program of the School through multiple afternoons of engagement with students through dance as a ‘360’ co-curricular and sport option, thereby increasing the number of students who are exposed to dance;
  • Cater to all levels of dance from beginner to advanced levels;
  • Offer dance qualifications such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) or equivalent;
  • Collaborate with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their post-secondary pathways;
  • Be available to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;
  • Be involved in the full Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey”; 
  • Work in collaboration with the Admissions Department when an interest in dance is expressed by a potential student;
  • Organize multiple opportunities for students to showcase their dance to the School, local and wider community through performances and competition involvement;
  • Inspire students to create, perform and lead.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Only candidates holding certification to teach dance Grades 8-12 within British Columbia will be considered;
  • Preference will be given to those with a BC Certification of Qualification;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada;
  • Candidates should hold a post-secondary degree or related certification in dance or a related field;
  • Ability to adapt to changing enrollments in curricular dance by being certified in other teachables;
  • Experience teaching students from Grades 8 to 12 in a variety of areas such as ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, hip hop, tap and other areas;
  • A proven record of encouraging students and practicing inclusion for all genders to embrace and find joy within dance;
  • Experience with choreography;
  • Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability;
  • Experience working with teenagers, preferably in a boarding / campus environment;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Experience organizing student performances;
  • Experience preparing students for local and provincial competitions.
