DCYP is a highly complex organisation employing c.1000 personnel which included Teachers, MOD Broader Banded Civil Servants, Soulbury Grades, Locally Employed Civilians and Contractors in multiple worldwide locations. As part of DCYP, MOD Schools operate in overseas locations providing an education to service children.

At the British Section, SHAPE International School, children are at the centre of every decision we make. We strive to ensure that our children engage in an excellent education where inspiring teaching and learning, international opportunities and character development combine so all children flourish and are well prepared for their next steps in life.

The British Primary School is one section of a truly unique international school environment which has 12 different national school sections housed on one campus. Operating independently from the other sections, but with all the advantages and potential for international collaboration, this Ministry of Defence primary school in Belgium is an exciting and unique place to learn and flourish for both children and staff.

Job description

We are seeking to appoint a suitably experienced Headteacher, from August 2021 or sooner if agreed, who will:

• Provide inspirational leadership and effective management in order to ensure that all children and staff flourish and achieve their full potential;

• Work closely with the military Command, parent community, key stakeholders in SHAPE and the wider international school;

• Enjoy international partnerships and create collaborative opportunities to inspire children, staff and parents in the unique international environment of the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Belgium;

• Recognise and value the importance of working with service children and ensure that their time in school is positive and successful and their transition between schools smooth and effective.

Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is a NATO Headquarters positioned in the southern French speaking part of Belgium near Mons. Approximately 14000 people work in SHAPE from 40 + different nations.

The centre of Brussels can be reached with 30 minutes by train. Belgium is in a great location within Europe; in only a couple of hours drive you are in Germany, Holland, Luxemburg or France and likewise it very easy to be able to return to the UK to see family and friends.

There are approximately 150 pupils in the British Section aged from 3 to 11 years and the English National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and requirements are followed.

MOD Schools is part of the Directorate Children and Young People in the Ministry of Defence (MOD); this is the management and operating system providing this educational provision. Teachers who work in the school have the security of being employed by the MOD as Civil Servants.

The British Section is a one form entry Primary School with Pre-School (FS1) provision. There are 8 classes with approximately 20 pupils in each class and benefits from excellent resources and staffing. The school has recently moved into a new building costing approximately £10 million and includes amongst other facilities a large hall, a variety of playgrounds, computing suite, specialist teaching rooms including a music room and pupils have access to the running track, sports fields and swimming pool on the base. The school building is shared with the Canadian school section who have a maximum number of 60 children. This provides a wealth of opportunity for collaboration with the Canadian school in addition to other national sections.

The British Section is accommodated on a large international campus composed of 12 different national school units. This involves sharing some facilities with other national school sections of SHAPE International School, as well as the SHAPE complex itself. The facilities and ground maintenance are managed centrally through SHAPE International School’s ‘General Services’ administrative department.

For secondary age pupils, the UK children normally attend the British School of Brussels (BSB), an international school situated in the suburbs of Brussels with school places funded by the MOD. The pupils are transported on a coach to and from BSB each day. There is also alternative secondary school provision (US, German and Belgian) available within SHAPE International School.
