Job overview

For September 2018, we are seeking to appoint a forward-looking individual with drive, character and excellent subject knowledge, to assist in the coordination and leadership of Mathematics curriculum, over one key stage, at The Romsey School.

The successful candidate will be someone with a proven track record of excellent outcomes at Key Stage 4, exceptional curriculum knowledge, a willingness to work flexibly to support the achievement of students, someone who consistently models outstanding practice and has students’ wellbeing at the forefront of all that they do. This position would suit someone who has the ambition of progressing to Head of Department and beyond, within the next 2 years.

We are committed to providing the appropriate training and experiences for the successful candidate to achieve this.   Mathematics is a leading department within the school, working closely to support a number of schools, both at the primary and secondary education level. The status of the department within the school enables smaller class sizes with pupil performance being consistently excellent at both key stages for a number of years. In 2017, 80% attained grade 4 or better at GCSE level, with 20% attaining grades 9-7. In 2015 our disadvantaged children outperformed non-disadvantaged children nationally, and in 2016 our progress 8 score in mathematics for our disadvantaged pupils was higher than for all pupils within our year 11 cohort. This is something which the team are very proud of and has led to the department being nominated for a national teaching award in 2017.

The school has recently become a PFEG Centre of Excellence in Financial Education due to the collaborative work led by members within the Mathematics Department, between all of the faculties within the school.  Department staff play a wider role in the school and community and have been instrumental with STEM visits and visitors, the School Fair, Ski Trip, Romsey Show, Enterprise Project, Duke of Edinburgh Award and our Romsey2Kenya project.

We will be strongly committed to your professional learning. As a member of the school staff you will have access to our staff benefits programme and will also receive your own tablet device.

The Romsey School is a high attaining and oversubscribed school, committed to high quality inclusive education.

About The Romsey School

The Romsey School is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive academy, situated in Romsey in Hampshire. The school, which converted to an academy in 2011 has approximately 1,200 students on the school roll.

The school has a distinctive ethos that successfully combines success and achievement within a happy, supportive and caring environment. It is very important to us that every child should have an opportunity to thrive within a highly personalised curriculum that recognises the diversity of talent within our pupils. The last Ofsted report commented that this is a school where teachers give pupils demanding work to do and ask probing questions which require pupils to work hard and think deeply.  In many ways we are a traditional school in terms of uniform and a belief in firm but fair discipline. But we are also a school that recognises that we have a responsibility to prepare pupils for this fast changing world we live in.

The secondary school aims for its students to make healthy, informed and responsible choices, to have a sense of awe and wonder, to acquire a lifelong love of learning, to be active and caring citizens, to be successful, and to be happy.

Ofsted report 2017

“Leaders at all levels in the school have extremely high expectations, and believe passionately that all pupils can and should succeed.”

“Pupils grow into mature and self-confident young adults during their time at the school.”
