Job overview

The Director of the International School of Monaco (ISM) seeks to make an exciting, new appointment of a Deputy Director Academic to give leadership to the academic life of the whole school and to bring the Senior Leadership team to five: the three Heads of School – Early Years up to Year 3 (210 pupils); Primary, Years 4-6 (150 pupils) and Senior, Years 7-13 (310 pupils) – and the Head of Wellbeing. In the future, the Heads of Departments in the Senior School will report to the Deputy Director Academic. She/he will work directly to the Director, deputise for him on academic matters and work collaboratively with the three Heads of School.

The ISM is an independent, co-educational, non-selective day school, founded 25 years ago and well established in the heart of Monaco. The 670 pupils are drawn from 50 countries and either live in Monaco or the surrounding villages on the Côte d'Azur. The teaching and learning are bilingual French/English up to the end of Year 6, but in the Senior School all lessons are taught in English and pupils are prepared for iGCSE and the IB Diploma. Academic results are strong, with many pupils proceeding to Higher Education. To enrich the academic learning, there is a full programme of co-curricular activities.

This post might suit an existing Head of Department aspiring to Headship, who wishes to gain experience of senior management in this attractive new post, where initiative and innovation can be demonstrated in this vibrant international school.

The Governors of the International School of Monaco will pay a generous salary plus a negotiable housing allowance, on top of which are several benefits.

About International School of Monaco

Founded in 1994, the International School of Monaco (ISM) is an independent, co-educational, not-for-profit day school in Monaco located in the Larvotto area of Monaco at 43 Avenue Princesse Grace. ISM welcomes over 820 students aged 3 to 18 years old, drawn from over 60 nationalities.

Driven by its vision of international education with distinction, ISM's mission is to provide an outstanding education for students so that they are happy, confident, independent, multilingual and responsible global citizens. The school's values emphasise integrity, learning, caring and respect, with strong emphasis placed on excellence, wellbeing and multilingualism as well as international mindedness and digital citizenship. In August 2020 the school signed a historic collaboration with King's College School, Wimbledon, as part of the school's aim to be among the best in Europe.

ISM offers a bilingual education in English and French for students in the Primary School (Kindergarten to Year 6). In the Secondary School (Year 7 to Year 13), the curriculum is taught in English, leading to internationally-recognised academic qualifications.

ISM is an all-through IB World Continuum School, delivering all four International Baccalaureate programmes: the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), IB Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Career-related Programme (CP). ISM also offers the Extended IB CP pathway, which allows high-performing student-athletes to complete the IB CP over a 3-year period instead of a 2-year period as part of ISM's accreditation as an Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC) from the World Academy of Sport.

Languages are an important part of the curriculum, with Spanish, Italian, Russian and German, in addition to French, on offer. Highly qualified teachers and support staff are recruited from around the world.

ISM provides an extensive programme of enrichment including sports, Model United Nations, an annual Arts Festival, the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award plus ABRSM and LAMDA music and drama qualifications. The school's unique location on the Côte d'Azur enables access to world-class museums and places of interest.

Outreach is an important element of school life, and students participate in a wide range of giving projects throughout the year via the school's philanthropy clubs, Student Senate initiatives, and the PTA, in partnership with local charities and environmental associations.

Pastoral care is a major priority for the school; an extensive PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) programme is delivered by teachers who receive regular training in child safeguarding, and a full-time Head of Wellbeing is supported by a wellbeing team including a school counsellor and psychologist.

ISM students are well-rounded, academically successful individuals who are admitted to top universities around the world, including in recent years the University of Oxford, University of St Andrews, Imperial College, University College London and London School of Economics in the UK and Harvard University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, amongst many other prestigious institutions.
