Job overview

The Head of Cheltenham College Preparatory School invites applications for the post of Deputy Head (Academic) starting in September 2024 or January 2025

Following the appointment of the current postholder to a headship, Cheltenham Prep is looking to appoint a new Deputy Head (Academic) to lead the academic provision within the school.

Cheltenham Prep is all about happy, excited children throwing themselves into every aspect of prep school life and doing brilliantly. The majority of our pupils go on to Cheltenham College, with a small number successfully prepared for other top schools nationwide. They leave us with a love of learning and a genuine sense of excitement about the next step of their educational journey (alongside great academic results and large numbers of awards and scholarships).

The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the academic provision within the school. There is a very strong team in place and the HoDs, and the Common Room, already do a fantastic job. Our new DHA needs to support these staff to ensure we continue to deliver outstanding teaching, as well as building on this success over the coming years. Years 5 – 8 are taught by subject specialists while Years 4 and below are taught primarily by class teachers, with some specialist support.

The successful candidate will teach a heavily reduced timetable in order to be able to fulfil the wide ranging duties of the job. The post holder will also be expected to play a full part in the life of this busy day and boarding school.

The role is likely to suit a talented, motivated, hard-working teacher who is looking for a hugely enjoyable and fulfilling role. All applicants, however, will be considered on the character of the individual applying and their fit to our school, rather than purely on the experience they have.

This is a tremendous opportunity for someone who loves prep school life to work with an amazing team in a thriving school. If you're happy to throw yourself into a myriad of different challenges, are dedicated and hardworking, and still expect to be able to get up every morning and be excited by everything the day has to bring then this just might be the perfect job for you!

If you think you would thrive here and have something special to contribute to the team, we would love to hear from you. In your letter of application (plus application form) please  explain what characteristics you have that make you perfect for the role and how you would go about ensuring that Cheltenham Prep, as one of the top schools in the country, continues to go from strength to strength.

The deadline for applications is: 0900 on Wednesday, 17 April

Interviews will take place in the week beginning: Monday, 22 April

It is hoped that the successful candidate will be able to start in September 2024 but for the correct candidate this could be January 2025.

How to apply

To apply, please forward a completed application form with covering letter, addressed to the Head, Mr Tom O'Sullivan, to: recruitment@cheltenhamcollege.org
