Job overview

Smith’s Wood Academy

Salary: Leadership Scale 20-24 (FTE £67,364 - £74,295)

Full Time, Permanent

Start date: April 2022

Due to the expansion of our Senior Leadership Team and our ongoing commitment to strengthening school leadership as a MAT, we are seeking to appoint a highly strategic and dedicated professional. The individual needs to be committed to continuous school improvement and have the ability to influence change to make a real difference to our students. We have invested significant resources into the well-being and pastoral care of our students and we are fortunate to have an extensive, highly skilled and dedicated pastoral team.  We are looking for someone to lead this team with a strategic vision based on inclusion but who also understands the importance of high personal standards, safe decision making and the need for a calm, consistent and individual approach to student well-being.

Smith’s Wood Academy is on a rapid improvement journey and in-line with the MATs on-going commitment to strengthen leadership, we have created this new role at Deputy Head of Academy level to work alongside and complement the experienced Deputy Head of Academy currently in post.

The successful candidate will be an experienced school leader who is looking to enhance their experiences in preparation for headship who:

• Is committed to setting high expectations and standards for all.

• Is unrelentingly ambitious for the academy, its staff and students.

• Has the ability to lead, manage and inspire both students and staff.

• Can manage long-term objectives whilst dealing effectively with fast moving day to day priorities.

• Has vision, enthusiasm and works effectively within a team as a leader.

• Has the confidence, credibility and experience to lead the academy when deputising for the Head of Academy.

In return we will offer you:

• The opportunity to be part of a highly effective and supportive Senior Leadership Team who are fully committed to our students and the academy improvement journey.

• The opportunity to shape the improvement journey of an academy with nearly 1000 wonderful students.

• A modern, spacious and attractive building with state-of-the-art equipment and fully resourced classrooms and workshops.

• Access to support and guidance from the MAT central team including a dedicated Trust Pastoral Leader.

• Bespoke Continual Professional Development (in the academy and online via the National College).

• Perkbox benefits; a wide range of shopping deals, gym membership discounts and an Employee Assistance Programme with a 24/7 confidential helpline.

• Free access to school gym and swimming pool.

The students of the Smith’s Wood community deserve the very best education, teaching and experiences and it is the firm belief of all that work in the Academy that every child, irrespective of background or need, must be given the opportunity to realise their dreams and aspirations in modern Britain.  As Deputy Head of Academy, you will be expected to live and breathe this vision and to inspire all those you come into contact with.

Smith’s Wood Academy is committed to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will therefore be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as well as providing evidence of qualifications.

Smith’s Wood Academy is a large academy with just over 900 students from Year 7 to Year 11. Located in the north of Solihull, the academy serves students who live in the immediate locality.

Our vision is that every child within the Trust, regardless of their background, will attend an Academy that offers an outstanding quality of education which means to us:

» Every child is recognised as an individual and has access to first-class pastoral care because we want them to be happy.

» Every child benefits from a wide range of enriching opportunities because we place great emphasis on their personal development.

» Every child benefits from dedicated leaders, teachers and staff who a relentless in their ambition to improve the quality of teaching in our academies because we know excellent teaching is key to transforming the futures of our students

Smith’s Wood is currently in a transitional state and there is a collective spirit that is apparent as the Academy embarks on the next phase of continued growth and school improvement.

Smith’s Wood converted to an academy on the 1st April 2017, working in partnership with the Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust (FMAT)

The five core values of the FMAT are central to all that we do:

Excellence – We strive for the highest quality to ensure excellent outcomes

Dedication – We believe there is dignity in hard work and effort

Ambition – We want the very best for our students

Integrity – We believe in openness and transparency

Tradition – We believe in old fashioned manners, courtesy and respect

Our aim is to prepare each and every student to succeed in the next stages of their career, education and training and to have the skills and competencies to do this. Smith’s Wood’s traditional curriculum and traditional approach to teaching and learning underpins our ethos and our drive to mastering the basics; reading, writing, communicating and mathematics.

We are incredibly proud of our Academy and its community and we sincerely hope that you decide to join the team!

At Smith’s Wood Academy we are committed to the highest standards of presentation, behaviour and achievement. A calm, purposeful environment is the key to successful learning and achievement.

Traditional values are encouraged so that students model respectful and courteous behaviour at all times. We want our students to be confident, responsible citizens who have an understanding of the world around them; we encourage them to make a positive contribution to the school and to their local communities to prepare them to excel in modern Britain. Why should a child's life chances be determined by their background? Demographics do not determine destiny.

Academic achievement is obviously vital so the students have the best chance of achieving their ambitions. The link with Fairfax School in Sutton Coldfield benefits all our students; in fact, any Year 11 student who achieves the required grades will gain entry into the Fairfax Sixth Form.

We look forward to receiving your application to join our family.
