Job overview

ST MARY’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL Newcastle upon Tyne Headteacher: J Foster NOR c.1300 (September 2017)

Deputy Head of Modern Languages

Full-time

TLR 2b £4,441. Main or Upper Pay Range

Required ideally for Easter or for September 2018

The Governors wish to appoint an excellent MFL teacher and leader to contribute to the leadership of our MFL department.  The successful candidate will work with the Head of Department to build on the existing strengths of the MFL department and to ensure that achievement, teaching, the curriculum and leadership and management are all first class, at each key stage.  The ability to teach French and/or Spanish is essential, as part of the responsibility of the successful candidate may be to lead one or other of these languages or to take responsibility for a key stage or stages.

St Mary’s is a very successful, popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted.  We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building, which opened in 2011.  We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the north-east.  We have around 1,100 students in the main school and our Sixth Form, of over 200, is expected to grow to 300 in the next three years.

In addition, we are a National Support School, increasingly engaged in school to school support, as well as a Teaching School.  Opportunities for professional development are, therefore, wide-ranging and an added attraction for potential new staff.

At St Mary’s, Modern Languages is a well-established and highly respected department with consistently excellent results, among the very highest in the north-east and nationally. Recent highlights include:-

  • MFL Progress score of +1.0 in 2017 significantly above the national average
  • MFL Progress 2015-2017 ranked in the top 10% of schools nationally
  • 88% A*-C across GCSE Modern Language subjects in 2017 with over half of pupils entering at least 1 language GCSE
  • 71% of A Level grades were A* or A in 2017
  • 100% of A Level grades achieved A*-B over the last 3 years

Above all, the Governors wish to appoint a leader with:-

  • A clear commitment to nurturing and promoting the school’s distinctive ethos
  • A passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students
  • A commitment to maximising achievement through excellence in teaching and learning
  • An excellent track record as a classroom teacher
  • The drive, creativity and ambition to lead and develop the department in the next phase in its development and to promote a love of language learning in our students

Application packs are available to download or e-mail the Headteacher’s PA, julie.patterson@st-marys.newcastle.sch.uk.

Closing date: Wednesday 31st January 2018

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people.  This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
