Job overview

Based in the stunning Kent countryside and close to the cathedral city of Canterbury, Junior King’s is one of the most prestigious prep schools in the country. Within the heart of the school lies a strong sense of community. We recognise that every child has different strengths and talents, and we pride ourselves on nurturing and helping pupils to reach their true potential.

We are seeking to appoint a Deputy Head Pastoral and DSL from April or September 2022 to join Junior King’s School.

The role of Deputy Head (Pastoral) is of central importance in the school. The post holder will be responsible for and take a lead on all aspects of pastoral care, mental health provision, pupil safeguarding and welfare, together with pupil behaviour. They will also be the school’s DSL, working in a team with DDSLs, and must have a proven track record of pastoral care. The successful candidate will provide leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of pastoral provision, and they will be a visible member of the school community, supporting the Head and the rest of the team in setting the tone in all areas throughout the school.

They must be an excellent teacher, a team player, empathetic, collaborative, and decisive with excellent communication skills, and they will be an ambassador for the school. They must have the ability to harness respect from pupils, staff and parents. Close liaison with the Senior King’s Deputy Head Pastoral and other key staff will be essential.

The Deputy Head Pastoral must have a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, ensuring the legislation is implemented to the highest standards. They will be resilient, able to prioritise, have the skills to empower staff and lead the school effectively alongside the Head and the other Deputies.

The successful candidate will be expected to play a full part in the life of our busy day and boarding school and contribute to our extra-curricular activities programme. Experience of working in a Prep School and teaching up to and including Key Stage 3 would be an advantage.

Applications, including a CV and covering letter addressed to the Head, Mrs Emma Karolyi, must be submitted online through the staff vacancies page on the Junior King’s School website: www.junior-kings-school.co.uk

If you are unable to apply this way, please contact Human Resources on 01227 595733. A detailed job description is also available and can be downloaded.

Closing date: Noon on Wednesday, 10th November 2021.

The Junior King’s School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
