Job overview

Deputy Head (Pastoral) - September  2018

A well qualified, enthusiastic and experienced teacher is required from September 2018 to join the management team as Deputy Head (Pastoral). The person appointed will be a member of the academic teaching staff so there is no requirement for applicants to have a background in the performing arts.

This is an exciting and rarely available opportunity to become part of the management team of this highly regarded central London performing arts school.

The school is co-educational, catering for 250 students from 10-16 who receive a high standard of academic education to GCSE level alongside their vocational training. The school is two form entry from year 7 onwards, with one small class in year 6 (usually between 15 & 20 students). The school devotes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday entirely to academic lessons and Thursday and Friday to vocational training.

Academic education and qualifications are highly valued by the school, and the students display a very positive attitude to their academic studies.

The academic staff work as a mutually supportive team with everyone taking responsibility for their own classes, and sharing responsibility for their subject area with other teachers of the same subject. There are no heads of department, no middle management posts and, at present, no deputy heads or assistant heads. All academic staff are line managed directly by the headteacher. Currently the headteacher is the only member of the academic staff who is part of the management team of the school.

This position of Deputy Head (Pastoral) is an exciting new post which can be developed in line with the strengths and interests of the person appointed, but with the main areas of responsibility being as follows:

  • To assist the Headteacher with the efficient day to day running of the Academic and Pastoral aspects of the Full Time School.
  • To take overall responsibility for Pastoral management (Behaviour and Student Well-Being) across academic and vocational days.
  • To take overall responsibility for Safeguarding as the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • As a member of the School Management Team, to contribute to the strategic direction, leadership and management of the Full Time School.

The school is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to safeguarding children. An Enhanced DBS check will be required.
