Deputy Head (Pastoral)

The Warden of Radley College invites applications for the role of Deputy Head (Pastoral) from April 2024.

Following the recent appointment of a new Deputy Head (Academic), the Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be another exciting addition as part of the wider restructure of the Senior Management Team (SMT) over the next two years, with new Deputy Heads appointed over each of the main pillars of the school’s operations: Academic, Pastoral, Co-Curricular and Systems.

Radley College is a traditional yet forward-looking and dynamic independent full boarding school of 765 boys, aged 13-18 years. Founded in 1847, the College sought to offer a different education from that offered by most Victorian public schools: alongside its Christian core values, a strong emphasis was to be put on the aesthetic. The College continues to benefit from its stunning rural setting within an estate of nearly 800 acres situated five miles south of Oxford. The hallmark of Radley remains its sense of community with a focus on warmth, generosity and kindness, inspiring boys to become outstanding, resilient, compassionate young men.

Delivering outstanding pastoral care is a collective responsibility shared by all members of the College, who together seek to provide every boy with the support and encouragement that will enable them to get the very best from their time at Radley. Each Social (Boarding House) benefits from a dedicated pastoral team and is characterised by a strong sense of family. Boys are looked after by a Social Tutor, supported by a resident Sub-Tutor and a Pastoral Housemistress (Matron).

Reporting directly to the Warden, John Moule, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) will lead the College’s rich pastoral life with vision and energy and will be a key member of the SMT. This is a dynamic moment in the College’s history, with unprecedented numbers, further plans for facility investment, an expanding partnership programme and a clear financial strategy to grow the number of funded places.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional leader and communicator with strongly held educational values that align with the strategic mission and aims of Radley College. They will have a collaborative and enabling style that will help them to bring the best out of others and a clear commitment to the boarding culture of the College.
