Job overview

Can you lead our school through an exciting period of growth?

Heltwate School is a highly regarded mixed day special school in Peterborough with a school community aged 4-19 years who have a wide range of interests, abilities and learning needs. We provide the highest quality of education, therapy and care to children who have moderate/severe and complex learning difficulties and two thirds have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition. Some pupils display challenging behaviour.

We are looking for an outstanding leader and inspirational strategic thinker with a clear vision, energy and fresh ideas. You will be an excellent teacher who has a genuine passion and working knowledge of SEND and driving school improvement, as well as someone who is resilient, innovative and has the type of enthusiasm that is infectious, so that you bring about change in a positive way. You will be sensitive, respectfully challenging, patient and kind: just the type of leader our young people, staff and community can relate to. You will help lead the school through its next exciting stage of development. This includes moving to a new purpose built school and hydrotherapy pool in September 2019 and helping to manage the expansion of the present roll to meet the complex needs of young people in Peterborough.

For children and young people with complex, challenging needs, the level of care and education must go above and beyond. That is what drives us, here at Heltwate. This is your chance to help lead and shape our school, creating strong teams which can focus on the needs and progress of our students and provide a supportive and empathetic environment for staff. Working with the Head Teacher, you will set the vision for the future of the school, ensuring we have the right people and plans in place to see that our young people, whatever their needs, leave the school feeling proud of what they have achieved.

We can offer:

  • a creative, purpose built learning environment where every child has the opportunity to reach their potential
  • happy, enthusiastic children who are keen to learn and achieve
  • the opportunity to join a strong leadership team
  • a committed, strong team of dedicated and high performing staff who feel valued and who are encouraged to contribute positively to the development of the school
  • a supportive and knowledgeable governing body
  • a commitment to developing positive relationships with parents, carers, and the teams who surround them
  • extensive opportunities for continuous professional development in line with the duties of the post

We need an individual who:

  • is an excellent classroom practitioner who understands and has deep empathy for the diverse range of needs found in a special school
  • has high expectations of pupil achievement and are innovative in your approach to curriculum development and assessment
  • a clarity of vision and purpose within a regional and national SEND landscape
  • has the ability to work with and inspire a wide range of stakeholders; have enthusiasm and sound common sense and are relentlessly positive!
  • a strong commitment to their own professional development and that of staff
  • can drive school improvement through performance management
  • has excellent communication, inter-personal and management skills which include strategic financial and human resources management

If you are ready to rise to the challenges presented by this post, we invite you to visit and then submit an inspiring application that clearly identifies your vision for taking Heltwate School forward. To arrange a visit please contact Clerk to Governors, Mrs Leigh Bowes on 01733 262878 or email; l.bowes@heltwate.net for an appointment.

Closing date: 9am Monday 5th February 2018
Interview dates: Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th March 2018
Start date: September 2018

Heltwate is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in its care and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Heltwate is a friendly and welcoming school for pupils aged 4 to 19 with an increasingly complex range of severe learning difficulties associated with Autism, communication and interaction, physical disabilities, and medical needs. Young people’s ability to make progress is limited across all areas of development.

Heltwate is a large special school with 213 pupils across 3 sites, with an intake from Peterborough and the surrounding area.  It is oversubscribed and has a good reputation and is still expanding.
