Job overview

Deputy Head – Upper School

We are looking for an outstanding, passionate and innovative Deputy Head who will motivate and encourage our staff and children to realise their full potential.

You will demonstrate the skills, expertise and passion to inspire and encourage the teaching staff and strive for excellence in all areas. As Deputy Head of the Upper School (Years 3-5), you will form a key role in supporting the Head and ensuring the smooth and successful running of the school, overseeing the day-to-day running of Upper. The successful candidate will be creative and energetic, have good interpersonal skills, provide an example of excellent practice and fully participate in the life of this successful and popular school.

We are committed to creating a curriculum that is adaptive, collaborative, innovative and academically rigorous whilst also developing strategies to improve outcomes that foster independent, lifelong learning. The main focus of the role is to oversee all areas of pupil development, learning, teaching, pastoral care and innovation with an emphasis on providing high-quality learning opportunities and pastoral care for all.

Established in 1987, Abercorn School is an independent, co-educational day school for pupils aged 2-18 set across three prestigious Central London locations. Our Lower School (EYFS and Key Stage 1) is in St John’s Wood, with Upper and Senior Schools both based in Marylebone. The School aims to offer its pupils the best start in education by providing a friendly, caring and inspiring academic atmosphere where a true love of learning is nurtured. The Senior School is a new venture from September 2022, with pupils now able to stay at Abercorn from Nursery until they study for GCSEs and A-levels.

Abercorn School strongly believes in empowering children to teach them the skills to become independent lifelong learners. Our practice focuses highly on child-centred learning, listening to and interacting with children to find out their interests and develop a passion for learning. We encourage a culture of collaboration to communicate and develop ideas and to think critically and creatively.

It is hoped that the successful applicant will take up the appointment at the beginning of the Spring Term 2023 (January), depending on the terms and conditions of their current contract, but the start date can be discussed further with interested candidates.

Abercorn will offer a competitive remuneration package to the successful candidate, in line with their skills and experience, which reflects the standing of this role.

Further information about the school can be found on our website: https://www.abercornschool.com/. Applications should be made on the official application form and emailed to Ewan Macfarlane at hr@abercornschool.com.

All candidates should be suitably qualified in line with the Personal Specification included in the application pack, which can be downloaded from TES Jobs.

Visits to the School are actively encouraged.

Closing date for applications: Monday 23rd of May at 1pm.

First round interviews for long-listed candidates will take place in the week beginning the 6th of June.

Second round interviews for short-listed candidates will take place in the week beginning the 13th of June.

Further information will be made available to candidates who are invited to interview.

We actively support equality and opportunity. Abercorn School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect all staff, Board members and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. All appointments are also subject to the receipt of references which the School considers satisfactory. All applicants must provide evidence of eligibility to work in the UK.
