Newham Community Schools Trust is delighted to invite applications for the post of Deputy Headteacher for Lister Community School.

Following the appointment of the current postholder as the new Headteacher from September 2021, this is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and inspiring  person to take on the role of Deputy Headteacher to lead on achievement and standards.

The principal responsibilities of this role will be to:

  • Develop strategy and articulate a distinctive and visionary shared educational philosophy and ethos which is visibly extended throughout the school
  • Develop and promote an ambitious, rigorous, innovative and values driven curriculum for the school
  • Manage the work of a variety of academic leaders, and working collegially with colleagues in the Leadership Team 
  • Be responsible for developing and implementing the assessment policy in close liaison with the Academic Board  
  • Quality assure assessment across the school  
  • Support the Heads of House and Heads of Faculty/Department to oversee their implementation of consistent and effective interventions to support pupil’ academic development
  • Oversee the development and deployment of pupil tracking, in close liaison with the Heads of House including baseline testing, value added and other forms of useful data.

You will also need to be a highly skilled classroom practitioner, as all members of the Leadership Team are expected to model good practice and to contribute to our continuing work to develop learning. Our approach is collegiate, and we are all expected to model our school values. 

At Lister, Deputy Headteachers are asked to undertake a wide range of duties and to contribute to whole school leadership.

Lister Community School is a large 11-16 comprehensive school in Plaistow. Our vision is to provide a world class education for young people in Newham. Our actions are driven by the conviction that our young people have the right to the same quality of teaching and range of opportunities as at any school in the country. Our ethos is one of continuous improvement, with a focus on strong partnerships and staff development. Over the last ten years we have significantly raised academic standards and are now the school of choice for our local community.

Lister is a Foundation School, and, together with three other secondary schools in Newham, has been collaborating for over five years as part of the Newham Community Schools Trust. Through this partnership, staff have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with colleagues from other schools. 

Although the role will have a key focus on raising achievement and improving standards, applications are welcome from colleagues who have expertise in leading other areas of the school.

About Lister Community School

Lister Community School is situated in Plaistow, East London, approximately 10 mins walk from Plaistow and Upton Park Underground stations.  We are also in close proximity to the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield (Stratford) shopping centre. Please note we have no parking available onsite.

We are a specialist school in Music and Science.  We are a mixed comprehensive secondary school and welcome both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background.  With over 1,600 students, we are a larger than average school in the London Borough of Newham.  The school benefits from being located in new and purpose built accommodation on a single site with ample outdoor areas and the use of an all-weather sports pitch.

The school is led by a team of senior leaders who are enthusiastic and experienced and, alongside all staff, share a positive and united vision for the school’s future.  With an improved curriculum, vertical tutoring and house systems, Lister provides a well rounded and balanced experience for students.

Resource Provision for Deaf Children: Lister Community School hosts the Resourced Provision for secondary aged Deaf children in Newham. Specialist staff support students using a variety of communication modes such as BSL, SSE and Auditory Oral. Deaf students are taught alongside their hearing peers in mainstream classes for the majority of their lessons. The Deaf Support Department is made up of a large team of Communication Support Workers and Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who work with the deaf students in mainstream classes as well as small groups and 1:1. Deaf students may also have access to Deaf Awareness sessions and pre and post teaching.

Newham Community Learning:  Our school is part of Newham Community Learning, which exists in order to provide an excellent education for all young people in our community.  We are the only Trust to offer all-through provision from ages 2 - 16 within a single family of schools in Newham. Across our two primary and four secondary schools, all located in the west of the borough, we educate over 5,400 local children and young people, and employ a team of  close to 700 members of staff, the vast majority of whom live locally.

Train with us - we are delighted to partner with Teach First to deliver our School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme.  Teach First is a national charity that develops and supports teachers and leaders who are determined to make a difference where it is needed the most.
