“St Monica’s is led by a committed team that is passionate about improving the school for the benefit of pupils” (Ofsted, October 2018)

The Executive Board of St Monica’s RC High School is seeking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher, who, alongside the newly appointed Headteacher, will play a key strategic role in moving the school out of its current OFSTED Category in order to improve improve outcomes and life chances for the young people it serves.

This 11-16 Catholic school is located in the area to the north of Manchester. After a period of some turbulence, the Executive Board and the newly appointed Headteacher are fully committed to continuing the rapid improvement which is already taking place.

The successful applicant will be offered the opportunity to:

  • support the newly appointed Headteacher, a Local Leader of Education (LLE);
  • develop and refine the school pastoral and well-being systems to ensure that the pupils of St Monica’s are supported to achieve their full potential;
  • act as strategic lead in the development of school systems that safeguard all pupils, particularly the most vulnerable;
  • provide strategic support for the improvement in provision for those pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities;
  • benefit from professional development that will include support via St Patrick’s Teaching School Alliance and System Leaders;
  • be part of a school that remains popular with parents and the local community;
  • work with supportive and focused Senior Leaders and Executive Board Members committed to the development of talented staff into the Middle and Senior Leaders of tomorrow;
  • make a significant and potentially career defining contribution to the rapid improvement of a school in an OFSTED Category.

We therefore seek an applicant who:

  • is an exceptional practitioner with strong subject knowledge and experience of raising achievement across the age and ability range;
  • is highly motivated by a belief that the life chances of all young people can be improved;
  • is a well-qualified, industrious and talented team player who believes in lifelong learning and can help pupils develop the skills and attitudes they will need in their future lives;
  • possesses the talent, interpersonal skills and range of pedagogical approaches necessary to contribute to the overall success of the staff and team;
  • can demonstrate a strong track record of positive impact to date;
  • has experience of improving behaviour, attitudes and school culture consistently over time; and
  • adopts a “can do” approach to the job, and a commitment to continuing personal development in the role.

St Monica’s RC High School is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

The school operates a Safer Recruitment policy.  The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Closing Date:   Wednesday, 3rd April 2019 at 12:00 pm

Interviews to take place:  Week commencing Tuesday, 23rd April 2019

Values and vision

St Monica’s RC High School is a Catholic community that aims to work in partnership with families, schools and parishes to teach the Catholic faith as a way of life. The school provides a caring, supportive environment where everyone is of equal worth. Jesus Christ is central to the school and its main goal is to allow everyone to develop their God-given talents and gifts to the full, while growing in faith through prayer and service.

The school learns from tradition and history but also keeps pace with education, challenge and change. It has seen many changes over the years but its aims remain the same – to enable young people to develop their future roles in life. As a community, it encourages all its members to exercise discipline, respect, tolerance and understanding in the search for knowledge and happiness. The ethos of the school is based on the values taught in the Gospels and applied to our world today.

Ofsted report

"Across the school, leaders and staff have high expectations of what pupils can and should achieve. The headteacher drives this culture of high expectations. He is unrelenting in his vision to improve the school so that all pupils get the highest quality education.

The behaviour of pupils around the school and in lessons has noticeably improved. Lessons are typically free from disruption. Behaviour during social times and when moving between lessons is calm and purposeful.

Pupils, parents and staff say that the school has improved significantly since the appointment of the new headteacher at the start of the year. The evidence gathered by inspectors supports their views.

Pupils have many opportunities to develop as well-rounded young people, grounded in the Catholic values of the school.”
