Job overview

Barnhill Community High School is a high-performing school in West London. Our academic progress outcomes place us in and around the top 5% of the country. The school is heavily oversubscribed and has increased its PAN over the last two years to accommodate the interest from our community. The school has received first preference choices for all available places in year 7 for the past two years.

Barnhill's most recent Ofsted inspection found the school to be 'Good' with evidence to suggest it could be 'Outstanding' in a full inspection. We will be inspected again in the next two years.

At Barnhill, all levels of leadership, teaching and care are directed to lift the life chances of our students. We are searching for a leader with expertise and commitment who shares in this vision.

About this role

We are seeking a leader who will be able to shape aspects of the school's curriculum. Our curriculum has a very good balance of high academic standards and personal development. The successful candidate will join this team and lead on aspects of it with both the head teacher and associate head teacher.

The role’s exact remit will be shaped around the successful candidate’s expertise. This could be a role in overseeing the intent, implementation or impact aspects of the curriculum team. Leadership of training and teaching and learning or leadership of assessment and examinations results are examples, but there are many possible combinations. Please see the current model attached to this advert.

The curriculum team also includes 3 assistant head teachers some of whom would be line managed by this post.

About You

  • Good school leadership experience, ideally as a senior team member.
  • A passion for education and an ability to innovate and inspire.
  • Excellent professional presence and sound people skills.
  • The ability to deliver exceptional outcomes for students.
  • A very good understanding of all matters related to the curriculum.
  • A good understanding of strategy and how to design, plan and implement.
  • A commitment to enhancing the lives of all students, regardless of background and need.

Working at Barnhill

Staff are very well supported by the school’s well-being programme and are respected for their commitment to advancing the lives of our students. A key aspect of this is professional development. The school’s ethos ensures that staff are able to work without impediment. Students are very grateful for the education and care they receive. Bad behaviour is not tolerated.

Our staff benefit from a well-being scheme, childcare vouchers, cycle scheme and on-site gym facilities.

The Senior Leadership Team

Barnhill’s Senior Leadership Team is comprised of a Headteacher, associate head teacher, two deputy head teachers (one of which is this vacancy) and five assistant head teachers. The SLT also includes the operations manager and PA to the head teacher and SLT. The team has a rich diversity of skills and experience; each with designated roles for school improvement.

Barnhill’s curriculum

Our curriculum is both academic and life enriching. It is tailored to suit the needs of all students, regardless of their background or need. Our ‘protected cohorts’ strategy ensures that children in receipt of the pupil premium and children with a SEND are fully supported inside and outside of the classroom.

Outcomes are high for all cohorts and across all subjects. STEM subjects are among the strongest, with maths being in the top 30 schools in England for student progress last year. Pupil premium children attain a grade higher than their peers nationwide and SEN children make more progress than the national average for non-SEN children.

The sixth form offers 20 academic and 4 applied courses. It is very popular, with our own students and also in the local community. 80 to 90 percent of sixth form students go on to university; a third of those to Russell Group and a handful to Oxbridge each year.

Comments from the recent Ofsted inspection

  • Pupils here show respect for all. They are polite, friendly and confident in expressing their views.
