Job overview

Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum)

Leadership Scale 22-26 (Outer London)

Required for January 2020 (or earlier of possible)

The Governing Body of Oaks Park wish to appoint a highly experienced and effective senior leader to the role of Deputy Headteacher to support and assist the Headteacher, Governing Body and the wider community by providing professional leadership, vision and strategic direction to promote and secure the best outcomes for our students.

Oaks Park High School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school situated in the London Borough of Redbridge. The school opened in September 2001 and it quickly became a popular and oversubscribed community school, we were awarded ‘Outstanding’ status in 2011. The school is centrally located in the London Borough of Redbridge, with very good transport links to central and outer London and Newbury Park station only a four minute walk away.

In September 2015, the school expanded to ten forms of entry in Year 7 and a large building programme was undertaken to accommodate this increase in student numbers.  By September 2019, when the ten form entry expansion has fully rolled through, the school is expected to have approximately 1860 students on roll, including nearly 400 in the Sixth Form.

Oaks Park is a truly comprehensive school. We take students from a wide range of abilities and a variety of different backgrounds. Nearly two thirds of our students have English as an additional language and over a third receive free school meals. Oaks Park serves the local community with the clear majority of our students coming from the local catchment area. We have built strong relationships with our feeder primary schools and families.

At Oaks Park, our child-centred philosophy puts every child achieving their potential as the ambition for the school, but most importantly strives to enable every child to believe that success is for everyone. Traditional values underpin everything that we do. Students are expected to display the highest standards of behaviour and show respect for themselves, others and the world around them. Developing positive relationships and taking pride in all aspects of school life are essential ingredients that make Oaks Park High School special.

This is an exciting time for Oaks Park. You would be joining a focused, highly reflective and courageous senior leadership team, who support a motivated and very capable team of staff. Our focus is to be the best we can be. We are ambitious to build on the successes achieved in the A Level and GCSE examinations last summer. Despite the challenges faced with the changes in curriculum and progress measures, the school responded with strategic planning, improved assessment systems coupled with determination to secure significant improvements across the key progress measures. In summary; the Progress 8 score was +0.76, Attainment 8 score 54.1, English +0.85, Maths +0.37, Ebacc +1.06 and Open +0.65.

As Deputy Headteacher you would be leading on our curriculum intent, including outcomes achieved, to ensure our curriculum is relevant, appropriate and challenging for all students across the school. The outcomes the curriculum delivers should enable our students to achieve their potential to give them the best chance of success in the future. How the timetable can be creatively used to support an adaptive, responsive and progressively challenging curriculum is a key part of this responsibility.

Other responsibilities awarded will consider the previous experiences and development needs of the successful candidate. Oaks Park is looking for a future Deputy Headteacher who relishes the challenges of school improvement to make a difference to the lives of young people, who can demonstrate a proven track record in this, and is considering Headship in due course.

Visits are warmly welcomed to see the school in action and experience for yourself why we are so proud of our students and staff. Should you wish to do so, or if you would like to speak with the Headteacher, Joanne Hamill, then please contact the Headteacher’s PA by email (HeadteachersPA@oakspark.redbridge.sch.uk) or by telephoning the school on 020 8590 2245 x 2073.

Closing Date: 9 am, Monday 1st July 2019

Oaks Park High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and references will be taken up for shortlisted candidates prior to interview.
