Job overview

DEPUTY HEADTEACHER

Full-time

L19 - L23 (Outer London)

Vyners School, Ickenham, Middlx

The Directors of the Vyners Learning Trust wish to appoint an inspirational and talented senior leader with proven strategic leadership experience across the 11 to 18 age range in a high performing school, to join Vyners School at an exciting stage of its development.

We wish to appoint a Deputy Headteacher to work alongside the newly appointed Headteacher and staff in the task of taking Vyners on the next stage of its journey to becoming an outstanding school by continuing the school’s sustained improvement and its transition from a six to eight form entry intake in 2019.

Vyners is a very popular and oversubscribed, mixed six form entry, 11-18 comprehensive school, situated in a pleasant residential area in North West London, bordering Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. We have a track record of real success at all Key Stages and this led to us being invited to become a Leading Edge School in 2016. GCSE results are excellent and we are now consistently ranked in the top 100 non-selective state schools in England. In 2017 84% of students achieved a Grade 4+ in both English and Maths at GCSE and we expect to be ranked in the top 10% of all schools nationally for progress measures. At A-Level, results are consistently strong and in recent years we have been ranked amongst the top sixth form providers in the country for progress measures. The school is the lead school in the Vyners Learning Trust which also includes a primary school and is one of the founding members of a new secondary Free school. The school has secured funding for a significant capital building programme that will include a new two-storey teaching block and artificial sports field with work scheduled to start this autumn.

We want our new Deputy Headteacher to have:

An expert knowledge about the process of learning

Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills

The ability to make a difference and the aspiration to become a Headteacher within five years

Uphold and strengthen Vyners’ well-established ethos and culture

Provide evidence of their impact as a senior leader on outcomes for students

Be committed to the continued development of both students and staff

Responsibilities will be negotiated upon appointment although a passion for Teaching and Learning is essential in all our senior leaders.

You will be working with a highly motivated staff, an experienced, high performing Senior Leadership Team and supportive Governing Body to build on the success and ethos already established.

Start Date:      1 January 2018 or April 2018

Closing Date: 9.00am, Friday 6 October 2017

Shortlisting:   Monday 9 October 2017

Interviews: Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th of October 2017.

We would encourage all applicants to visit the school in advance of submitting their final application during the week commencing 2 October 2017.

Vyners School is committed to safeguarding all of its students. All staff are required to adhere to our safeguarding policies and procedures and undertake a full enhanced DBS check.

Vyners School is a non-denominational, mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Ickenham, in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

The school is named after Sir Robert Vyner, who was a Lord Mayor of London and lived nearby. It first opened its doors as a grammar school in early 1960, and later became a comprehensive school. It gained academy status in 2011 and has around 1,200 students aged 11-18.

Values and vision

The Vyners School values were developed by governors, students, parents and staff in 2013. They are: community, aspiration, respect and endeavour. Vyners School encourages students to be resilient, unafraid to take calculated risks and make mistakes. Its values, the school hopes, will help pupils to stretch themselves, because the most valuable learning often takes place outside their comfort zone.

The school seeks to blend a 21st-century education with more traditional behavioural and uniform standards. It aims to produce rounded and grounded young people who will make a positive contribution to the world. Vyners School specialises in mathematics and computing.

Ofsted report

“Students achieve well and their attainment is well above average and improving in nearly all subjects and for most groups.  Teaching is good and improving rapidly. This is recognised by parents, carers and students."

“The best lessons are ambitious, helping students to work things out for themselves and achieve their very best.  Behaviour and attitudes are exceptional. All students and parents and carers are clear that the school is a safe place to learn. Relationships are positive and students embrace their learning with enthusiasm.”
