Job overview

Help to shape the future direction of The Birley Academy

At The Birley Academy, we believe that learning is our most important activity: and that’s equally true for our students and staff. We’re passionate about self-improvement and we go the extra mile to make sure that lessons are relevant, purposeful, engaging and rewarding. An excellent CPD package supports our people at every stage of their careers, from training through to Headship, and as part of the L.E.A.D. multi-academy trust, we enjoy comprehensive backing and can offer exceptional prospects.

We are looking for a Deputy Headteacher to join the Leadership Team of The Birley Academy and be responsible for the Quality of Education. You will be joining us at a truly exciting time – as a team, we are fully committed to transforming the school into an exceptional place to learn. As the new Deputy Headteacher, you will play a key part in helping to shape the future direction of our school.

This post has a key focus on the quality of education. We are seeking someone with a passion for developing and implementing our approach to staff development – developing skilled teaching, promoting a culture of positivity, high aspiration and expectation, and ensuring a high-quality curriculum is enacted across all areas of the academy.

We are looking for someone who will embrace taking The Birley Academy to be one of the best schools in the city and beyond! We are seeking a Deputy Headteacher who will become a core part of our school community, with a can-do attitude and a passion for getting the best out of everyone. You will be self-motivated but collaborative, passionate and research-informed, and demonstrate radical candour but with humility. Your standards will be high but with a base of warmth and care.

We are situated on a modern campus in south-east Sheffield with strong, respectful teacher–pupil relations, working in a cultural environment of high expectations and even higher achievement, backed by rigorous self-evaluation and continuous improvement.

To apply, please send a completed application form and covering letter explaining your interest in the role and how you meet the person specification to: hr@birleysecondaryacademy.co.uk

Closing date: 9.30am on Wednesday 24th April 2024

Interview date: We expect interviews to take place on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April 2024

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt; therefore, shortlisted candidates may be contacted in advance of the closing date.

The L.E.A.D. Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Subject to an enhanced DBS check.

The Birley Academy is a popular secondary school situated in the south east of Sheffield. We have a modern building set on a pleasant campus and enjoy excellent facilities. We have recently joined L.E.A.D multi-academy trust, marking an exciting time in the Birley story and a great opportunity for staff to be part of any improvements.

Our vision at Birley is simple: to ensure that we constantly challenge ourselves and our students to aspire to our very best, enjoying learning and being active members of the learning community. As part of the L.E.A.D multi-academy trust, we work with all stakeholders including parents, local businesses, community leaders and partner primaries to represent and meet the needs of our students. We all believe that our students are entitled to nothing but the best.

Our Structure and Organisation Since February 2017 we have been part of the L.E.A.D multi academy trust along with all the primaries in our family of schools. As part of our outstanding MAT we have access to support, challenge and resources to enable us to drive improvement. Students are taught in a variety of groupings including mixed ability and sets. Each lesson lasts for an hour and there are five of them in a day. Every morning students start with either tutor time or assembly. The school day runs from 08:40 to 14:55 although breakfast and after-school activities run every day. Students in KS4 will have four options to go alongside the core offer of English, Maths, Science, RE, PSHE and PE. We are particularly pleased with the take up for EBacc which we encourage as many students to take as possible.
