The Trustees are seeking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher for Sedgefield Community College with effect from September 2022 or sooner if possible.

Housed in a striking, contemporary building, Sedgefield continues to be both the highest performing secondary school in County Durham, and consistently amongst the top 5% of all North East and Cumbria secondary schools. The most recent OFSTED inspection resulted in the school being judged as ‘outstanding’ overall and one where inspectors described student attitudes to learning as impeccable. In addition, our school is named in The Sunday Times as the North east School of the decade. However, in spite of the accolades, we are an school that believes we can improve further and as a result we are looking to appoint someone who has the ability to work closely with the Headteacher taking on a central role in the strategic leadership of the school as it moves into its next stage of development.

Laidlaw Schools Trust is a growing multi Academy trust in the North East of England, serving children and families in Sedgefield, the west of Newcastle and in Pennywell, Sunderland. We pride ourselves in being a progressive, inclusive trust that supports every child to develop their talents whatever they may be and to reach their academic potential. It is important that as a learning organisation we adapt and change to the needs of our pupils. We take care to value and develop all colleagues to make sure they can do their very best for children across the Trust’s schools. Our Academies also enjoy strong support from an experienced LST central team, based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The nature of the post demands someone who is both a consistently outstanding teacher and a proven leader with clear and substantial evidence of effective change management. Further the post holder must possess the adaptability and willingness to embrace and accept change as an intrinsic part of school improvement. Accepting that the specifics of the role will be subject to change as the priorities of the school adjust in what is an exciting phase of development at Sedgefield Community College.

We welcome applications from dynamic, creative and driven senior leaders who have substantial experience of multi-faceted whole school strategic development as part of a senior leadership team.

Named in the Sunday Times list of the UK's top 50 schools (11 to 16),  Sedgefield Community College is now firmly established as one of North England’s consistently highest performing schools, with a reputation for outstanding and creative teaching and learning allied with strong, successful leadership. Whilst we are proud of our reputation as a highly successful school, as measured by its examination performance, we also take immense pride in the reputation we have for developing outstanding teachers and leaders.

In March 2017, Sedgefield was subject to an OFSTED inspection and as a result judged to be outstanding in all respects, however this significant achievement did not signal the end of the school’s commitment to achieving ever improving standards in all aspects of its work, rather it has merely acted as the catalyst for further progress.

Our student's attitudes to learning are excellent, with OFSTED going so far as to describe student conduct as ‘impeccable’. The high standard of care and support we provide our students has over time created a tangible bond between students and staff and as a result relationships between adults and students are such that we can confidently describe our students as welcoming, respectful and thoughtful and Sedgefield as a ‘happy’ school.

Having moved into our stunning new school building in 2011, we recognise how fortunate we are to have such a superb learning environment and the facilities that it provides. Whilst an impressive building does not necessarily equate to an outstanding school it certainly plays its part in supporting the culture of high standards and excellence that permeates everything that we do.
