Deputy Headteacher : Teaching and Learning

Required for September 2023

Salary range L25 – L29 + OLWA

  •  Are you a strategic leader, passionate about leading change and unlocking the potential of staff and students in an outstanding girls’ comprehensive in East London?
  • Are you an inspirational teacher with a track record of using evidence-based pedagogy to develop staff and a relentless focus on overcoming barriers to learning and progress?
  • Do you have the skills and experience to take on a demanding role, knowing that you will enjoy the challenge and grow as a result?
  • Are you excited at the prospect of becoming the Teaching and Learning Deputy in the lead school in the North East London Teaching School Hub?

Walthamstow School For Girls is proud to offer a ‘once in a career’ opportunity for an exceptional candidate: working as the Deputy Headteacher in charge of Teaching and Learning in our outstanding comprehensive school. We are looking for someone who can shape pedagogy, research, training and staff development across the school, as well as share your practice through the Teaching School Hub.

You must be passionate about Teaching and Learning and professional development.  You will be an inspirational leader, either a DHT looking for a second Deputy role prior to headship, or an experienced AHT who is ready for a challenging career move. Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, you will enjoy building on our existing work and will take the strategic lead in this important area. You will have a strong track record of impact in your current role and will be ready to share your experience of what exceptional progress and outcomes look like so that you can challenge our school community to improve further.

You will join the Headteacher and other new leaders on our expanded SLT, taking the school forward on the next phase of its journey. Working as part of a committed team, your insight will enable us to further develop our impact-driven strategic planning. Your role will include opportunities to grow leaders amongst staff and students, through coaching and distributed leadership; to promote pastoral care at one key stage; to provide robust support and challenge for all staff through our ambitious approach to Performance Development (appraisal).

Walthamstow School for Girls is a wonderful place to work, learn, teach and lead. We are passionate about education being a vehicle for promoting equality for all and our mission is to empower young women to become leaders of the future. We are a truly comprehensive school, proud of our diversity and committed to social justice. Although we are an Outstanding school (Ofsted, 2018), achieve exceptional outcomes and have consistently been in the top 20% of schools nationally for progress, our focus is on developing exceptional young women, not just on academic achievement.

We now require someone with the experience, vision and drive to help us to achieve our ambitious goal of ‘bringing out the gift’ in every member of our school community and inspiring them on a journey of lifelong learning.

We envisage that there will be a great deal of interest in this exciting role.  We would be delighted to welcome you to the school for a tour and an opportunity to meet with the Headteacher to discuss your application.

About Walthamstow School for Girls

Walthamstow School for Girls (WSFG) is a mainstream, non-denominational secondary school for girls aged 11-16. It is situated in Walthamstow, East London, and it has  900 pupils on its roll.

WSFG is an oversubscribed, highly successful state comprehensive, with a proud history of educating girls since 1890. We are passionate about education being a vehicle for promoting equality and our mission is to empower young women to become leaders of the future. Although we are an Outstanding School, achieve exceptional outcomes and have consistently been in the top 10% of schools nationally for progress, our focus is on developing exceptional young women, not just on academic achievement. We want to recruit staff who actively embrace diversity and inclusion and who are committed to social justice as part of the state comprehensive system.

The school was founded in 1890, originally as a private school, situated on West Avenue. It later moved to the current location on Church Hill. In the 1920s unemployed workers built the school an amphitheatre known as the "Greek Amphitheatre" which still exists in the grounds today. The most recent additions to the school buildings were made in 2010 and the school now benefits from excellent facilities as well as beautiful school grounds.

Walthamstow School for Girls is a wonderful place to work, learn, teach and lead. We are passionate about education being a vehicle for promoting equality for all and our mission is to empower young women to become leaders of the future. We are a truly comprehensive school, proud of our diversity and committed to social justice.
