The Deputy Head Teacher will be responsible for working with and supporting the Head Teacher on the following key school leadership and management areas.  

Strategic direction and development of the school

• Working with the Head Teacher to contribute to a strategic view for the school in its community and analyse and plan for its future needs and further development within the local and national context

• Demonstrating high standards of personal integrity, loyalty, discretion and professionalism

• Publicly supporting all decisions relating to whole school policy.

• Assisting in developing and evaluating policies and supporting inclusion across the school

• Taking a leading role in the management of all school assessment data, including collating, analysing and interpreting attainment and achievement data and sharing this with relevant stakeholders

Teaching and Learning

• Providing an example of ‘excellence’ as a leading classroom practitioner and inspiring and motivating other staff

• Working with the Senior Leadership Team and Head Teacher to sustain high expectations and excellent practice in teaching and learning throughout the school

• Regularly monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupil’s achievement and use benchmarks and set targets for improvement.

• To be involved in ‘lesson observation’ with other members of staff to raise pupil’s standards of achievement and to evaluate practice

Leading and Managing Staff

Working with the Head Teacher to lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop all staff to secure continual improvement including his/her own continual professional development 

To lead in Performance Management of some staff and to be responsible for NQT assessments and inductions as necessary. 

To lead Teaching Assistants in Performance Management and training development in partnership with the Head Teacher. 

In consultation with, and by the direction the Head Teacher, deploy people and resources efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with the school’s plan and financial context

Specific Duties

Deputise for the Head Teacher in her absence

• Take a major role in the day-to-day running of the school

• Promote parental engagement.

• Contribute to the Website

• To develop AFL across the school

• To lead the team in the development of the curriculum

• To monitor the quality of leadership and management within the EYFS

• To monitor the quality of Phonics teaching alongside the TLR

• To be visible and approachable

• Ensure all policies relating to Teaching and Learning are in place.

• To manage intervention staff alongside SLT

• To engage in professional development 

• Contribute to a building a positive, happy school ethos 

• Supporting staff to provide an exciting, stimulating and creative curriculum 

• Promote the values and achievements of the school to the community

• Co-ordinate and assist in leading assemblies

• To have general responsibility for all Outside Agencies related to teaching and learning.

• Monitor and support middle leadership within the school.

• To be involved in managing the schools’ lunchtime arrangements, along with the Head Teacher and other senior teachers

• Assist with the appointment and induction of new staff and provide monitoring and support.

• Assist in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the School Development Plan / SEF Sections and Aspects of Heads report to Governors.

• To communicate regularly with the parents, Governors, School Improvement Partner and the Local Authority

In consultation and cooperation with the Head Teacher + SLT

• Ensure that a high standard of physical and emotional care for all children is maintained

• Ensure the good conduct and behaviour of children and assist in promoting good order in school

• Foster good relationships with non-teaching staff and parents within the school

• Undertake such reasonable activities as the Head Teacher and Governors may, from time to time require

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES WILL BE BUILT AROUND KEY ASPECTS OF THIS JOB DESCRIPTION.
