Job overview

Godstowe School is an independent day and boarding school for girls age 3 to 13. We have approximately 400 girls with a community of about 100 boarders from the UK as well as other countries around the world, adding an important international and multicultural dimension to the school.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and patient Deputy Housemistress for one of our 3 boarding houses. Under the leadership of the Assistant Deputy Head (Boarding) and the Houseparents/Housemistress, the Deputy Housemistress will have the ability to relate to girls aged 7 to 13 and will share in the pastoral responsibility and well-being of girls outside of school curriculum time. The successful candidate will be expected to take full responsibility when the Houseparent/Housemistress is off duty.

The position would suit someone with experience of working with children, preferably in a boarding environment in an independent school, and will require teamwork, flexibility, compassion, resilience and a good sense of humour.

The ethos of boarding at Godstowe is to provide a home-from-home feel and that of a large extended family. Every boarder is encouraged to develop their full potential in all areas of life. Our aim is for all our girls to grow up as confident, happy and successful individuals. One of the many strengths of boarding at Godstowe includes the extensive Co-Curricular programme. As a non-selective school, Godstowe is thriving in terms of examination results, enrichment, art, musical and sporting achievement.

This is a full-time residential position during term time and duties will primarily be based in the boarding house. The School offers competitive remuneration with all meals provided during term-time. The Deputy Housemistress lives in the boarding house in a single room with en-suite, and this accommodation is available to the post holder throughout term time and also during holidays, if desired.

To apply for the position, please visit our website and read full details: www.godstowe.org/vacancies . You should then complete our application form and send it, together with a covering letter, to the Headmistress, Miss Kate Bailey. Applications can be submitted via email to the Head of H.R. and Compliance Mr Matthew Watts hr@godstowe.org.

There is a genuine occupational requirement (as defined by Schedule 9 (Part 1) of the Equality Act 2010) for the postholder to be female. Accordingly, this post is open to women only.

Godstowe Preparatory School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS report will be required for the successful candidate.

Something Special is happening at Godstowe

Godstowe was founded by two strong, progressive women, originally in fact as a school whose purpose would be to prepare girls for the move down the hill to Wycombe Abbey School. Their vision was for an innovative, academic and broad education for girls and, without a doubt, this continues to live on in today’s school.

Our ethos is simple. All we want is for our girls and boys to be Confident, Happy and Successful. Indeed, if the first two are true, the third will almost certainly follow. Success is defined in many ways, and we mean successful in the broadest sense: successfully kind, successfully courteous as well as successful in achieving a wide range of goals. We keep our pupils busy and engaged, we entertain and intrigue them, encourage them, and excite them. Happy children are easy to teach.

With outstanding, highly qualified teaching staff as well as a strong and experienced pastoral team, excellent facilities, wonderful surroundings, a non-selective intake policy and a more positive, exuberant and industrious atmosphere than you will find in other schools, it is likely that most of our children will be happy to learn, happy to stretch themselves, happy to support each other, and happy to do whatever they can to take an active part in their own education. Why push children through the curriculum when they can be inspired to make their own journey, choose their own routes and arrive at their destination under their own steam?

Our pupils love their time at school. It never ceases to amaze me just how much highly motivated and enthusiastic people can willingly contribute, and we don’t just mean the girls and boys, we mean the staff and the parents too! Godstowe is alive with opportunity. Remember, to learn a lesson you need to live it.
