Job overview

Richmond Park Academy (RPA) is part of Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), a network of 66 primary, secondary and special academies.

It is situated in East Sheen, close to Richmond Park, the largest of the capital’s eight Royal Parks and the biggest enclosed space in London. Richmond, Kingston and the West End are all between 15 and 30 minutes journey from the school and our proximity to central London means that students can benefit enormously from the vast range of social, cultural, sporting and academic opportunities that we are able to access.

Our student body is diverse, exciting and talented – and the same is true of our staff. We put huge emphasis on professional development, most of it in-house, and are proud of the high number of good and outstanding teachers who work in our school. We are also noted for our ‘can do’ attitude. We are keen, always, to encourage new and/or young staff to make their mark as soon as they are ready.

The school completed a £10m rebuild and refurbishment programme, including the introduction of a 6th form, in 2014. Our 2012 Ofsted reported that we were a ‘good’ school in all categories. The inspector wrote: “Leaders and managers share a commitment to drive up standards, provide a broad and sturdy foundation for students’ future well-being and establish the academy as the school of choice within its locality”.

We are seeking to appoint a talented, highly motivated and inspirational professional who will enhance our Leadership Team with energy and vision.

We pride ourselves on providing our students with a sense of success and positive achievement in their academic and personal skills. This is approached by treating every student with unconditional support and nurture.

Our new Deputy Principal will build on the foundations already in place, harness the school’s significant potential and provide the strategic vision and dynamic leadership that will lead it to a confident and successful future.

You will be an experienced team leader, with excellent people management skills and:

  • Be creative and innovative, with the vision and drive to lead the next stage of Richmond Park Academy’s development.
  • Have the passion, enthusiasm and energy to inspire the young people at Richmond Park Academy to reach their full potential.
  • Have the knowledge and experience to support the educational development of all students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds and with Special Educational Needs.
  • Understand how to improve Progress and raise Attainment across the school.

This is undoubtedly a challenging role, but a hugely rewarding one. You will start with considerable advantages – a highly motivated and committed team, terrific students and an experienced network around you to support you in driving the improvements needed in the academy.

This is a fantastic opportunity which could lead to fast progression within the Group and we would invite you to grasp it with great enthusiasm!

Visits to the academy prior to application are warmly welcomed so prospective candidates can see for themselves what makes Richmond Park Academy special. To arrange a visit or organise an informal discussion please contact Ms Debra Barlow, PA to the Principal on 020 8487 1930 or email dbarlow@richmondparkacademy.org

Closing date: Monday 3 July 2017 at 9am.
Interviews will be held Thursday 6 and Friday 7 July 2017.

As the sponsor, AET believes that all young people deserve to become world-class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them. In each of our academies, you will benefit from visionary, inspirational and dynamic leadership and be empowered to develop your own skills with access to world-class CPD and Talent Management programmes. You will also be entitled to the following benefits: a health cash plan, vehicle affinity scheme, childcare vouchers and Westfield rewards.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early should we receive an overwhelming response. All candidates are advised to refer to the job description and person specification before making an application.

Richmond Park Academy (RPA) is situated in East Sheen, close to Richmond Park, which is the largest of the capital's eight Royal Parks and the biggest enclosed space in London. RPA is on a journey towards excellence.  Many targets have been achieved on the road to achieving that goal. Incoming cohorts are now at healthy numbers and forecast results for upcoming years are looking strong. We are looking to deliver consistent results that accurately reflect the skills and commitment of teachers and students alike and we want those results to ensure that RPA becomes the school of choice for all local parents. Many in this affluent area take the independent route. Our challenge is to compete and deliver a compelling alternative.

The school completed a £10m rebuild and refurbishment programme, including the introduction of a 6th form, in 2014.

We warmly welcome visitors and hope that you will come and see for yourself just what we are about and whether or not working here is right for you.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum intent is:
Richmond Park Academy will provide a curriculum with social equality and opportunity at its heart, erudition as its aim and our values of pride, aspiration, resilience, kindness and skills at the forefront. All students will be met with intensity and rigour in every aspect of their school life and we will strive to ensure that there are no wasted minutes in the classroom. Staff will endeavour to craft intellectually demanding sequences of lessons that meet students with higher expectations than that which they would expect of themselves with medium-term planning for long-term retention as a cornerstone of our academy. Students will develop a deep working knowledge in their chosen areas of study through the exploration of a topic, experiencing its application and drawing out the ethical principles that underpin it. Students will acknowledge their focus on fluency as providing them with the toolkit necessary to solve in-depth tasks in every subject and, in developing their complexity of thought, they will understand the ability to make links as being the foundation of intellect, all with the purpose to serve and help the community and world in which they live.

For us, balance is key. Students are encouraged to participate in as many different activities as possible and make the most out of their time with us. We are very proud of our extensive and free extra-curricular activities which are challenging, varied but inclusive. Those considering higher education have frequent opportunities to visit a range of redbrick and Russell Group universities.

In addition, we are focused on disruption free classrooms and have unapologetically high standards of behaviour. A core part of our ethos, encapsulated in our RPA pledge, is kindness. This is a fundamental part of our teaching.
