Job Title: Design and Technology Technician

Job Purpose: To support the departmental teaching staff in providing students at Surbiton High School with a safe and effective Design & Technology experience and ensure high levels of achievement and progress.

 

Reporting Line: Head of Design and Technology

Start Date: As soon as possible

Tenure:  One year fixed-term, Full time (38 weeks) or Part time (3/4 Days per week)

Key Responsibilities:

 

Daily Duties and Lesson Preparation 

  • To prepare materials and resources as required by the subject teacher prior to lessons.
  • To organise extra equipment for lessons as necessary.
  • To ensure tools, machines and equipment are kept in optimum condition and stored correctly and carry out a daily inspection.
  • To empty and clean the dust extraction filters as required by the manufacturer. 
  • To assist departmental staff in developing appropriate resources for teaching and learning. For example, the manufacturing of jigs, formers and templates for project use.
  • To provide support for the teacher during practical lessons. This may include overseeing small groups of pupils during practical activities. 

 

General

  • To organise materials in the Department.
  • To use the school’s purchase ordering system to order materials and resources.
  • To liaise with the HoD and the Finance Department to monitor the department’s budget and check orders have been logged accurately.
  • To organise and catalogue books within the department.
  • To assist teaching staff in promoting and raising the profile of D&T within and outside School.
  • To work as part of a team within the Design and Technology Department assisting each other as and when required.
  • To undertake such other tasks relevant to the work of the Design Technology Department or the needs of the school as they may arise. For example, supporting staff prepare sets and props for the school productions; supporting science technicians with occasional manufacturing tasks; organising and preparing display materials etc.
  • To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably requested.

 

Health and Safety

  • To keep all classrooms organised and free from hazards.
  • To ensure that all machines, tools and equipment are safe to use and report any problems to the HoD.
  • To carry out initial maintenance and repairs to machines, tools and equipment to ensure that they conform to the relevant safety standards.
  • To liaise with outside maintenance contractors to have annual planned maintenance undertaken on all machines, tools and equipment. This will also include PAT testing.
  • To liaise with the HoD and Health and Safety Officer to ensure that all risk assessments are up to date and being followed.
  • To ensure that all hazardous and flammable materials are recorded and stored as per COSHH and RA information.

 

 

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

 

Qualifications

  • Good Honours degree or relevant industrial experience
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development would be an advantage

 

Skills

  • Excellent organizational, administrative and ICT skills
  • Be able to confidently use workshop equipment found in a school DT Department
  • Be able to carry out primary maintenance and repair duties on equipment found in a school DT Department
  • Be able to manufacture jigs, formers, templates and other resources accurately and quickly.
  • Have high levels of safety awareness
  • Ability to use CAD packages such as Techsoft V2, Solidworks, Photoshop, GeoCam would be desirable
  • Ability to use packages such as excel for keeping accurate account and purchase records would be desirable

 

Experience

  • To have worked in an educational environment with young people would be desirable

 

Knowledge

  • To have had prior experience of working in a technology environment.
