Job overview

Job Reference: 165255

The school is seeking to employ a Technician to assist teaching staff in our Design Technology Department. The ideal candidate will need to be practical. They will need to have excellent IT and organisational skills along with being a strong team player but also have the ability to work independently. The role will be 37 hours per week, term time only.

Balshaw’s has been a specialist STEM school for well over a decade and the Technology Faculty has been an area of excellence in the school throughout that time and remains as an outstanding department not just within the school, but as a leading department in the region. All students study a technology subject at KS4 of either Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials or Textiles. Therefore this is a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicant to work in one of the strongest technology departments in the country.

Balshaw's CE High School is an outstanding Voluntary Controlled Church of England High School in Leyland. It is the school of choice for parents in the area with a very proud history stretching back over 235 years and is heavily oversubscribed with 917 students on roll. As well as outstanding outcomes in D&T and STEM subjects Balshaw’s also has pride in its sporting and arts achievements boasting a number of successful and famous alumni. The school has long standing links with the Diocese and has a strong Christian ethos. It is said at Balshaw’s that “Once a Balshavian, always a Balshavian.” This is very true – a number of staff were previously students of the school and there is a very small turnover of staff either through retirement or promotion. We hope that when you visit our school you will get a strong sense of the family values that underpin what we do.

This is a great opportunity to work with a brilliant team who are highly experienced and incredibly supportive of one another. The DT team are constantly re-evaluating what they do and seeking ways to do things better. A candidate who can bring initiative, efficiency and a positive attitude will find this a very rewarding position.

There is a lot of variety within the role, from keeping COSHH compliance up to date, to cutting wood, buying ingredients for Food Technology, laser cutting awards, supporting students with their project development and much more. Training is available for use of bench saw, COSHH and so on.

The closing date is Monday 30th April, 2018

The interviews will be on Tuesday 8th May, 2018

Please note that the school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Values and Vision

Richard Balshaw wanted the school to be a supportive and inclusive place that benefited the whole child, and his view remains important today. The school has high expectations of pupils and aims for excellence, at the same time as upholding its Christian faith and creating healthy working relationships with parents and local churches, businesses, industries and the community. Balshaw's motto “Non sibi sed aliis”, which translates as “not for ourselves but for others”, reflects the selfless and tolerant nature of the school .

Ofsted

"Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Pupils know that their teachers have high standards for their academic achievement and their behaviour. The majority of pupils work hard to rise to these expectations. They behave responsibly and they achieve well. The atmosphere around school is calm and respectful.  Pupils feel safe.  Leaders and governors share a clear vison for the quality of education."
