The Diocese of Chichester is looking for a dynamic, energetic and strategic individual to lead its Education team. The Education team provides support to the 157 Church of England schools in Sussex, reaching over 37,000 children and their families. The department has 12 staff plus a team of consultants providing a range of services to our schools including school improvement, RE, governor development, capital building projects, place planning and much more.

As the new Director of Education, you will be passionate about ensuring the best possible education for our children and enabling our schools to confidently develop their distinctly Christian character. You will help us navigate effectively the changing educational environment and will engage with policy making at a local, regional and national level.

We are seeking someone with an appetite for challenge. We need you to inspire school and academy leaders, to empower our school improvement team and to oversee wise appointments to governing bodies, trusts and committees.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of strategic management, and experience of influencing opinion and delivering change.

The post will be subject to satisfactory enhanced DBS with barred list via the Disclosure and Barring Service. There is a genuine occupational requirement for the individual to be a communicant member of the Church of England or of a church in full communion with it, or an equivalent member of a church that is a full member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

The Board’s responsibilities include

  • promoting education which is consistent with the faith and practice of the Church of England in the diocese
  • promoting religious education and religious worship in schools in the diocese
  • promoting church schools in the diocese and advising the school governors, trustees of church educational endowments and others

The Diocese is the sponsor of a Multi-Academy Trust containing 5 primary and one secondary school and set to expand, and two other schools are in standalone academies.
